In no more than 150 words, give a non-technical summary of the project
There is an explicit need to examine the effect of a father’s absence on the mother-child relationship in Asian countries. The relationship between a mother and child is very crucial because a mother is the one who provides the child with the various needs in life. Thus, it is important to study on factors that might affect mother-child relationship. Absence of father has been showed to affect mother-child relationship (Biller, 1971). In Singapore, a majority of families still maintain father figures as the key disciplinary figure and in the process desist from providing emotional support to children (Lamb & Tamis-Lemonda, 2004; Shamir-Essakow et al., 2005; Stuart, 2015). In families without fathers, the disciplinary figure goes missing and this tends to lead into children having disciplinary issues above many others. A quantitative study will be undertaken to examine the effects of fathers’ absence on the mother-child relationship. The significance of this research is to help underscore trends and their consequences on the wellbeing of children in order to improve their lives (Jampaklay, Richter, Nanthamongkolchai, Tangchonlatip, 2016). The proposed alternative hypothesis is that there will be a difference in mother-child relationship between individuals with fathers and without father.

PART TWO

A RESEARCH DESIGN
A1 Will you be using an approved protocol in your project? No
A2 If yes, please state the name and code of the approved protocol to be used[1]
NA
A3 Describe the research design to be used in your project
Research design

A quantitative study will be undertaken to examine the effects of fathers’ absence on the mother-child relationship. The independent variable will be the father’s absence and the dependent variable will be the mother-child relationship. The basis of selecting this research design is guided by the hypotheses and sampling method.

Sampling procedure

The online survey will be given to 50 people without fathers (i.e father missing from birth or lost father figure for at least 10 years) and 50 with fathers regardless of their gender. Participants targeted include those aged from 18 to 55 years old. A stratified sampling method will be used to recruit adults.

Data collection

The responses will be collected and analysed to find out the effects of a father’s absence on the mother-child relationship. The relevant questionnaires will be presented in SurveyMonkey and disseminated through the researcher’s personal network. The questionnaires will be used to assess the importance of father-child relationship and how it affects the mother-child relationship. This will be done by using a stratified sampling method. The survey will be completed by the participants using SurveyMonkey and will be advertised on researcher’s personal social media networks. Participants will be informed that their consent is assumed following their continued participation as reflected in the Information Sheet (see Appendix A), and all data will be kept anonymous. Also, they can only withdraw up to the point of submission. All data will be only accessible by researcher and his supervisor.

This is the message the researcher will be sending to his friends & family to do the survey.

“Hey there, hope you’re doing good. I need 5-10 minutes of your time to help me fill up a survey which helps for my research on ‘Effects of Father’s absence on mother-child relationship’. If you have any queries you can email me at: svxmv1@gmail.com, or my supervisor at raeyi_yap@easb.edu.sg. Thank you!”

Measures

The name of the test will be ‘Parent-Child Relationship Survey’ (PCRS) (see Appendix B). It consists of 24 questions. Each question contains an answer scale from 1 to 7. 1 being the not likely and 7 being the most likely. Participants with low overall score indicate a poor relationship with their mother while participants with high score indicate a good relationship with their mother.  This test has been used on a thesis called ‘The long term effects of divorce on parent-child relationships’ done by Mark Alan Fine.  Research has shown PCRS’s excellent validity and reliability (92% to 93%) in Iranian samples (Parhizgar, 2002; Dadash, 2004). This scale showed excellent internal consistency in this study (93% for both mother father forms). Demographic information will be collected as well (i.e age, sex, gender and whether or not if they had a father).

Data analysis

Finally, analysis of data will be carried out through the use of use of a statistical analysis software SPSS. A t-test will need to be undertaken for purposes of comparing the key variables “father’s absence” and “mother-child relationship.” To this effect, the proposed alternative hypothesis is: there will be a difference in mother-child relationship between individuals with fathers and without father. Null hypothesis is: there is no statistically significant effect of a father’s absence on the mother-child relationship.

C POTENTIAL RISKS
C1 What potential risks do you foresee?
–          Participants feeling uncomfortable with certain questions that covers about parent child relationship.
C2 How will you deal with the potential risks?
–          At any point of time while doing the survey, if they feel too taxing or uncomfortable answering the questions, they can discontinue the survey at any time, only up till the time of submission. From then on data will be completely anonymous.

Title of Project: Effects of Fathers’ Absence on Mother-Child Relationship

Background

This evaluation project is an attempt to understand the differences in mother-child relationships between families with fathers and without fathers.

Your participation in the research project

The survey that you will help to fill up will help make a difference in analyzing the differences between different family experiences.

What would happen if you agree to continue ?

You will be asked to complete an online survey which consists of about 25 questions and can be completed within 10 to 15 minutes.

Are there any risks?

There is no risk involved in doing the survey.  However, while doing the survey if you feel any unpleasantness or distress, you can drop out from the survey, until the point of submission. However if you feel any distress you may refer to this link for free counselling help: https://www.ncss.gov.sg/NCSS/media/NCSS-Documents-and-Forms/NCSS%20Internal%20Documents/LIST-OF-HELPLINES.pdf

How we protect your privacy

All responses collected will be kept anonymous and confidential without any identifiers. Data will be stored on researcher’s SurveyMonkey account which is protected by password. However, your consent is assumed following your continued participation.
