The start of the 19th century in Britain retained the scars of the debate over the French Revolution and the rights of all men. The ruling classes became more and more alarmed by the growing demands to do away with the “OLD CORRUPTION” that dominated Britain for decades. Outside the “gates of power” there was a growing call for change. Two major themes dominate this century: hostility towards the status quo and demands for religious rights.
