Final Examination
The final examination requires you to complete two parts.
The first part includes two take home ‘pre-essay’ responses. A sample exam answer is available
on CourseDen. Please ensure that you conform to the expected form of response.
The second part requires a one page response for the required question.
The exam is due by 11:59 PM on May 8, 2018 (05/08/2018).
Part I
I. Examine the role of the regions of the Yellow River valley in the formation of Imperial
China. Discuss and contrast the regions of Guanzhong and Guandong in this process. How did
the people in each region contribute to the development of imperial Chinese culture, politics, and
ideology?
II. Discuss how civilization in the Islamic world thrived, while it struggled in the European
Christian world during the early medieval period? How can this best be explained?
Part II
Each of the chapters in Gordon’s When Asia was the World pertains to a particular biographical
story of a person living between about 500 and 1500 in Asia. Choose among any of the assigned
chapters, and using appropriate and specific evidence from the text, explain how the author uses
the story to defend the book’s central argument about the role that Asia played in the world
during this one thousand year period.
