Many people take the concept of gender for granted: you are either born a male or a female. For some individuals, gender is a natural or God-given biological determination. Sigmund Freud once famously said, “Biology is destiny.” But since the 19th century, gender has come under different scrutiny. Sociologists and psychologists, anthropologists and medical doctors all have begun to see gender as a “social construction” and the categories of masculine and feminine are not as stable and arbitrary as western society has historically determined. Gender roles, too, come with certain expectations about society’s beliefs. However in today’s society we are seeing a radical shift in gender roles. The categories of male and female are now being challenged; social media has impacted and even led to the change of categorizing gender into 58 types. Nevertheless, is society ready to accept concepts such as “Gender fluid” and “two-spirit”? And how does that help or complicate raising a child within a societal paradigm? On another point, will gender roles of male and female be obsolete in the future? Have men and women in society begun to change behavior and their choices of work, lifestyle, and beliefs based on new gender-role models, such as men being primary caregivers and women being the economic heads of the household? Will people resist new gender roles and designates as the issues become more complicated or will society become more diverse and accepting of new roles?

You may consider such subtopics as “gender and popular culture,” “ traditional and nontraditional gender-roles,” “gender and sex,” “ the transition of gender and behavior,” “gender roles and education.” , “gender and the ‘#Me too’ movement.
