Students will produce a short comic book that examines some event(s) of historical important either in Germany, locally (Vancouver/BC), or as part of their own family history. Modeled after the kinds of graphic narratives we have been reading in class, the final project will be an 8-page comic book that utilizes at least one historical object or archival document. While students are welcome to find a topic that speaks to them, they are encouraged to produce a comic based on archival research performed on the Vancouver Holocaust Education Centre website, the archive for which is available online here: https://www.vhec.org/collections/. Students will select two to three documents or artifacts (a picture, a letter, an object, etc.) – from the internet, their personal collection, or an online archive – to form the foundation of their graphic narratives or inform its narrative progression, though the role of these objects is at the discretion of the student.
