Elderly Care: The App
My
product is a smart-phone app called Elderly Care. It is intended to take care
of the elderly. The product will be supplemented with cameras, microphones and
listening devices, which will be installed inside and around the house in which
the elderly live.
This product is not only new to the
market; it is special. My reason for pursuing this product is more inclined to
the solution of a social problem than profiting. It has been observed that with
the global economic development and the growth of cities, the younger
generation is migrating to the cities in search of jobs, leaving the elderly
alone in the rural areas. The World Health Organization (WHO) has observed that
the economic migration of the younger people to the cities and the change of
the traditional role of a woman as a care to career pursuer in India have left
the elderly unattended to, resulting in the deterioration of both their mental
and physical health (WHO, 2006). This product is intended to monitor and take
care of them, remotely, either by their family members or by some
organizations.
The mission of the business is to ensure
that the elderly receive adequate care while younger generations carry on with their
economic pursuits. The objective is to have at least 90% of all neglected older
people receive care in the next five years. I believe that the business will be
within the proximity of its potential pinnacle by then.
Admittedly, the product is likely to
raise some legal and ethical issues in terms of privacy. I also recognize that
the right to privacy is not just an ethical issue; it is a legal issue as well.
Article eight of the Human Rights guarantees and protects the right to privacy
and family life (Rights, 2000). Among the issues of interest to us include psychological
integrity, transmission and use of information about one’s private life and
illegal surveillance.
I intend to put measures in place in
respect to these ethical concerns and the law. A legal document confirming
consent to the use of the product will be signed, upon the elderly person’s
consent. They will also have a choice of where to have an installation within
their homes and environment. We will not store any data. The app only facilities
transfer of real time information from the apartments to the recipients, upon
whom what happens to the information depends.
Owing to the proliferation of apps that
offer dissimilar services in the market, we are aware of the scale of the challenge
of promoting a smart-phone app and we have measures in place to accomplish it. There are so many marketing platforms and each
of them is suitable for a given product. I intended to explore all of the
popular options, the television and the radio being among them. Our major focus
will be the internet. So many people are on the social network sites.
Furthermore, Trusov and Pauwels’ analysis show that the advertising on the
social media is economic and effective (2009). We intend to establish a strong
presence on social media. It has also been estimated that almost everybody uses
Google as the preferred internet search engine. Moreover, Google offer
advertisement on the basis of expected profit per view (Buijsrogge et al., 2012).
I believe that placing advertisement on
it will be economical and effective. Also considering that the problem of the
neglect of the elderly is a social problem that is of concern to states, human
rights organizations and non-governmental organizations, we will solicit for their
help.
The application will be free for
download, and there will be versions, which will be compatible with the various
smart-phone operating systems. I will charge a monthly fee of $5 for using the
app. The revenue will be used to run the business, which includes developing
and improving the product for we hope to make the world a caring place.
