INST0062 DISSERTATION PROPOSAL FORM – GUIDELINES FOR COMPLETION
You should start to consider the questions below when writing your proposal. Do not worry if you cannot answer many of the questions at this stage, as you will also be able to think about them later, together with your supervisor, once you start your dissertation. Please also take note of the general DIS instructions, which you can find here: https://moodle.ucl.ac.uk/mod/book/view.php?id=1288199
For each section, the questions in bold italic are very probably relevant for all or nearly all dissertations.
The questions in normal font may or may not be relevant for your own dissertation, depending on the type of dissertation you are proposing.
PROVISIONAL DISSERTATION TITLE
Is the provisional title concise and easily understandable by most people?
AIMS OF THE DISSERTATION AND RESEARCH QUESTION(S)
What is the general topic you want to work within?
What is the overall aim of the dissertation?
Is the overall aim sufficiently focused and realistically achievable in the time available?
How can the overall aim be expressed as a research question or questions?
Can the main research question(s) be broken down into sub-questions?
JUSTIFICATION
How will the dissertation be useful to other people in their work, study or further research?
In what ways will the dissertation be original?
METHODOLOGY
How will I achieve my aim and answer my research question(s)?
Will the dissertation build on existing published or unpublished work, methods, theories, systems, models, frameworks, and/or prototypes?
What modes of data collection and analysis I will use, e.g. quantitative, qualitative, both?
What experiments will I undertake, and how will I evaluate them?
How will I collect or decide upon the requirements and/or specification for my system/prototype/model/theory/algorithm/evaluation?
Will I aim to implement my system/prototype/theory/model/algorithm/evaluation? And if so, how? Formal language? Programming language? Pseudo-code? Theoretical Model?
How will I evaluate my system/prototype/theory/model/algorithm/evaluation? Empirically? Formally? Or theoretically?
What primary or secondary sources I will use?
Will I use one or more case studies? How will I choose case studies that are good examples of something more general?
Why is my methodology appropriate for my aims and research questions? What are its limitations?
INDICATIVE BIBLIOGRAPHY
What books, articles or other sources do I already know about that may be relevant for my dissertation?
MEMBERS OF STAFF CONSULTED
Which members of staff have I already contacted about my idea(s)?
Total word count shouldn’t be more than 750 words.
