Regarding my issue, human trafficking affects everyone. The stakeholders are those currently being victimized, their families, and the survivors. Obviously they will support my recommendations because it means that improving how victims are identified by the police while being arrested for conducting crimes associated with their status. Health care workers, nurses, doctors, and even social workers must also be trained to identify human trafficking victims, especially since many of them have obvious signs of trauma such as emotional, physical, and sexual abuse (Leslie, 2018).
Those who would oppose these recommendations would include businesses that profit from labor trafficking and the politicians who endorse policies that protect them claiming that they are making their city a sanctuary city where in fact, these very policies allow victims to remain hidden because the proper authorities are not able to investigate (Cutler, 2018). These politicians demand that the local population refuse to assist ICE and other public safety officials.
Although the fear of deportation causes many of them to suffer in silence, my recommendations include allowing those that come forward either informing authorities of their trafficking status or providing information on businesses that use trafficking having immunity (Zeldin, 2016). There are even people who have legal documentation taken away from them to keep them in their debt bondage.
Pimps, gangs, and other blackmarket businesses who profit off of sex trafficking would also oppose my recommendation because it will shut down their profitable businesses. I think many of the “clients” would oppose this as well since many service members and tourists that visit Virginia Beach become clients of these prostitution businesses such as escort agencies, strip clubs, and even prostitution in many of the low budget motels that are located all over Hampton Roads.
Human trafficking is beyond disgusting and I actually regret even starting this subject. I was not even aware of the magnitude of this criminal enterprise and was one of the naive people who just assumed that many of the massage parlors and prostitutes were doing this on their own. Although some may be legit, if there is such a thing as legitimate prostitution, many of these prostitutes and Asian massage parlor employees could possibly be victims of sex trafficking. Maybe in your own cities.
