The subject of this course is education, public policy, and the workforce.
Uploaded is a proposal I submitted with how I was approaching the paper. Feedback from the professor is also included.
Directions from professor:
Each registered student (or team of two students if you so choose) will be required to write a substantial (i.e., on the order of 10-12 double-spaced pages for an individual and 16-18 pages for a 2-person team), well-researched and documented term paper on an approved topic of the student’s (or students’) choice, relevant to the subject matter of the seminar as reflected in the course title.
An appropriate paper might involve a critical review of the literature on a topic such as comparative labor market success of educated people in a particular field or from a particular ethnic or gender group and associated policy steps taken or needed to aid them in the U.S., a state or another country; a critical appraisal of approaches to linking labor market needs with education system output in a particular field, state or a specific foreign nation; an analysis of a policy or program to overcome gender stereotyping in a specific field or occupation; an analysis of a state or college’s strategy for better linking postsecondary education or training with employer needs; an assessment of a specific public policy or program related to encouraging increased education or training of current workers; or, a close look at another country’s approach to linking secondary education and career preparation in comparison to the U.S.
These suggestions are illustrative only, of course. A wide range of policy-oriented topics in the field of education, the workforce, and public policy are fair game for your paper topic. The paper can be a normative policy analysis in something like the classic sense, or can explore the historical, political and sociological origins of a pertinent policy, together with a review of what is known about its efficacy. In any case, an effort should be made in the paper to offer well thought-out and supported recommendations to relevant policymakers based on your research.
A written term paper proposal, including a meaningful outline of the expected content, research strategy and a preliminary list of sources that shows some research, is required by class time on January 28 (Week 4).
