Oz Asia Project Assessment
UNISA WORLD MUSIC THEATRE 2019
ASSESSMENT 1(b): Oz Asia Festival Project ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
From the Course Outline:
See a performance at the Oz Asia Festival. Research the company and style. Write a paper describing the piece, the performance(s), the style of performance and music.
Note: Oz Asia Festival finishes 3 Nov and this assignment can be submitted any time after you have seen the show you choose: however, I am conscious the Showcase is on 15th Nov so have made the deadline for this later so that you are clear of the stressful time ahead of presenting a public work.
Detailed Criteria:
WORD COUNT: 900 words
Performance: You can see any of the performances in the Oz Asia Festival, either from the circulated list (via email and on the Course homepage) or your choice from the Program. NB: Free performances are an option, so you MUST choose a live performance to go and see. Workshops are also part of the options.
Research the Company and style of performance:
Research the artist(s) who created the work, including the style(s) or artistic traditions they draw on or incorporate into their work. ‘Style’ can refer to musical traditions or forms used (eg jazz, gamelan, Buddhist chant, K-Pop, Peking Opera, protest songs etc), and/or theatrical traditions incorporated into the piece (eg butoh, musical comedy, theatre of the absurd, verbatim theatre, etc)
Write a paper describing the piece, the performance, the style of performance and music:
Us the information you found to analyze the performance. Describe the performance, giving a succinct synopsis and an appropriate level of detail. Make reference to how you saw the elements you researched included in the performance. Include your perspective on seeing the show, eg completely different from anything you’ve seen, shocking, alienating, your favorite artist, etc. This criteria also applies to workshops.
For example, your paper might look like this:
Intro: Name of piece, company/artist, style, when you saw the performance
Paragraph 1: Context (eg artist background, style, traditions etc)
Paragraph 2 & 3: Description and analysis of performance, including reference to your research & the styles referred to, as well as your reaction(s) to the show.
Summary: statement addressing the task and summarising what you found.
Research Requirements: at least one academic source (on the artist/style/form etc) and at least one good quality – ie reliable and of good standard/regard – resource (eg the artist/company website, and/or a good quality review/analysis of the performance prior to this festival), plus a link to the show.
