This paper is an exploration of a parapsychological topic. There are many parapsychological special
interest groups around the country. Some of these groups discuss ESP and outer-worldly experiences
while others may host ghost hunting tours, etc. You are to conduct your own ethnographic research into
one such group. I call it an ethnography because you are learning about people different from you. An
ethnography is the study and systematic recording of human experience. You are to interview with a
group or individual from one of these groups. I even welcome visiting one such club meeting or ghost
hunt. What you learn about these people and their experience may surprise you. If you are having
difficulty identifying a group or individual to interview, contact your instructor for guidance, should you
find this assignment problematic for any reason.
• The paper should include the following:
• Note you should include subheadings for all sections.
• An introduction including academic literature which explains this particular area of study.
• Introduction paragraph including a thesis statement
• Body including academic sources that explain the background of this area in parapsychology.
• Any academic literature which might help explain your particular community of interest.
• A paragraph which states your own beliefs (or bias if you do not feel comfortable sharing your
beliefs in a paper) and your relationship to the topic of study (Google “reflexivity statement” for
more information)
• Provide some short narrative or demographic detail about your interviewee(s). Avoid using
actual names or places. Use statements like “Ghost hunting group in a northeastern city.”
• Provide detailed information about the setting of the interview. Include pictures where possible
(be sure to request permission before taking pictures)
• Describe your research questions
• Provide the results of your interview and the interpretation of that interview.
• Discussion of the results and their overall impact on you, the researcher.
• What did you learn?
• What can you say about your interviewee’s worldview?
• How does this interview relate to the class material we have covered?
• Include pictures of your research participant (with their permission of course) or their meeting
space and include them in the appendix. Do not copy from a webpage (I will be checking).
Note all citations should include a short identification regarding the author and their credentials as an
expert. Webpages will not be accepted without an author’s qualifications. This should be attached after
your works cited page. Bubba’s Ghost hunting page is not a source unless you are interviewing Bubba.
