For this assignment I need 2 separate responses, to peer 1 and peer 2
The purpose of peer review is to facilitate quality-nursing care through best practice discovered in evidence-based research. According to the
American Nurses Association, “peer review in nursing is the process by which practicing registered nurses systematically access, monitor, and make judgments
about the quality of nursing care provided by peers as measured against professional standards of practice. Peer review implies that the nursing care delivered
by a group of nurses or an individual nurse is evaluated by individuals of the same rank or standing according to established standards of practice.” Peer review
helps not only the author but the reviewer as well through the development of a critical eye which can then be applied to their own work.
Prompt
As the reviewer:
When you peer review another’s work, you will critically evaluate and suggest improvements. You will likely read the abstract once or twice before delving in with
comments and first impressions. Using the checklist below, identify strengths and areas for improvement, being sure to address each critical element in your
review.
Peer Review Checklist:
Aims and objectives: Is the purpose clearly stated?
Background: Does the author offer background on the subject?
Methods: Are the methods clearly stated? What type of method did the author use?
Results: Are the results valid and reliable?
Conclusions: Are the conclusions clearly stated and are they informed by the results?
Relevance to clinical practice: Does the author state the relevancy to clinical practice?
Articulation of response (e.g., citations, grammar, spelling, syntax, organization)
You will be evaluated on your peer reviews, not the abstract submitted, using the rubric below.
As the author of the abstract, remember the following:
Read the review carefully, avoiding any desire to defend your choices.
If you are unclear what the reviewer means, ask them to clarify.
If you have any questions, feel free to pose them to the reviewer.
Take special note of repeated commentary (e.g., grammar, citation, etc.) as this may signify an area for improvement.
Thank the reviewers for their feedback. If some commentary was especially helpful, this is useful information for the reviewer.
Accept that negative feedback comes with the territory. Your job is not to make everyone happy but to make your work the best that it can be.
Guidelines for Submission: You must submit your abstract to the provided discussion for review by Sunday of the previous module. When choosing two abstracts
for review, be sure to select peers who have not yet received feedback. Each of your reviews should be 2–3 paragraphs in length.
Peer #1 The purpose of this literature review is to investigate the effects of animal assisted therapy on behaviors and quality of life in dementia patients. Patients with dementia can experience dementia associated behavioral symptoms, such as agitation and aggression that can negatively impact their quality of life. Furthermore, many dementia patients can suffer from isolation and loneliness. Healthcare providers can find it difficult in providing activities for such patients. Animal assisted therapy is an area of interest as once such activity. This literature search was conducted via The Shapiro Library using keywords such as “dementia”, “animal assisted therapy”, “pet therapy” and “quality of life”. A total of seven articles met criteria and were included in the review. Results yielded a positive effect on quality of life indicators in multiple studies as well as positive effect on agitation and aggression in some studies. It is safe to conclude that there is a positive correlation between animal assisted therapy on quality of life in people with dementia.
Peer 2
In the article exploring hidden functions of nursing bedside shift report by Kirstin A. Manges and Patricia S. Groves, the purpose of the article was to include beside shift report with frontline nurses. “Thematic analysis of previously collected semi-structured interviews with nurses (n = 13) about NBSR was used to explore NBSR’s latent functions” (Manges & Groves, n.d.). This study was clear and supported well. “Although there were several limitations to the study including First, interview data are from a grounded theory study aimed at describing how bedside nurses use NBSR to keep patients safe” (Manges & Groves, n.d.). Also, they determined their results through secondary analysis so it could not be verified. And the last limitation includes “despite measures taken to enhance trustworthiness, due to the nature of hybrid thematic analysis, the identified functions are only 3 possible interpretations of these data” (Manges & Groves, n.d.). Strengths include helping protect patients at the bedside, help the patients feel they have a say in their care. “This study provides further evidence that NBSR serves multiple important social-cultural functions within the nursing work environment. Nurse leaders can use the findings from this study to inform the development or improvement of efficient, effective, and sustainable NBSR at their local institution” (Manges & Groves, n.d.). The results showed that bedside shift report was effective. “Three latent functions emerged; nurses used bedside shift report as a performance, ritual, and sensemaking opportunity. The latent functions are described, and corresponding recommendations for successful implementation of NBSR are provided” (Manges & Groves, n.d.).
