Please provide an example of a time where you behaved badly on a team. At what point did you realize you were acting badly and did anyone bring it to your attention? What did you learn?

In a Sales department, performance is often synonymous to achieving of targets. I was a Team Leader and we were soon reaching to our month-end. In our Department, our Team was known for its highest efficiency, generating more leads than the other teams and converting the same into the final sales. However, the last month did not seem to work in our favor. Apart from the month-end issue, what I was concerned with, was also the quarter-end issue. The other team from our Department had bucked up and were performing really well, so much that somewhere within the department itself, there was a birth of an intense but undeclared competition. Further, I was also competing for the promotion which was directly incidental to the performance of my Team. This was the time that anxiety and stress overpowered me. I suddenly started behaving very harshly upon my teammates. I made them sit for longer hours without any scope of overtime allowances, burdened them with chasing for higher targets, shortening their lunch breaks and almost neutralizing their tea breaks to pursue their leads for more sales. I in fact cancelled one of my teammate’s leave application for his cousin’s marriage that he was looking forward to attend ever since the marriage proposal had got concretized. He was very close to his cousin. I took no mercy on the personal fronts of my team. Professionalism, I believed was the key to generate figures and results.
With all this so-called ‘efforts’, our team finally managed to meet the targets and we emerged out as the ‘Best team’ for the quarters. The promotion aspect is still in process. But later I realized how badly I acted with them when I saw a kind of ‘rebel’ attitude among my team members towards me. Although they would oblige my instructions, I did not see the vigor in them to chase the targets. There was a kind of silence which is difficult to describe. They spoke among themselves but would not include me in their conversation. Once our team shared a friendly rapport with their team leader but today, they all worked as a stranger with me. They reduced down themselves as only my acquaintance. The personal bonding kept reducing. I gradually started realizing my fault when such a demonstration of cold-shouldering was given to me. I learnt how important it was to work with the group than working for own. I further realized that even if I got a promotion, I would have lost some of the finest support of my teammates. I realized my ambition was killing the happiness of so many people around me. I hence took a step of apologizing for my behavior and assured them to start afresh. Things are improving since then.
