In quantitative research, we looked at the rate of falls numerically before and after the implementation of a program. In qualitative research, if you were interested in study the impact of falls on the patient’s quality of life, you could obtain this information through personal interviews. The unit of measurement would be the words that the patient uses, and a qualitative method would be used to analyze this data.

When considering other types of qualitative research a relatable example comes to mind. During the past year we recently implemented bed side hand off report during shift change on our unit, initially this new policy received a lot of resistance from nurses for a variety of reasons. By providing questionnaires to the nurses and gaining further insight in to determining why this policy got so much resistance and providing an opportunity for feedback into ways this new policy could have been improved would have been a great way to do qualitative research in the acute care setting. By conducting in depth interviews with participants researchers are able to gain a large amount of information about research topics, which is one of the many reasons qualitative research is so valuable ( Polit & Beck, 2017.).
Qualitative care can improve health outcomes in a variety of ways depending on the type of research being done. In the above discussed type of research the feedback could have been have been utilized to improve compliance with the new protocol and education could have been provided on why bedside report is so important. As nurses we are thought to use critical thinking in everyday practice, in situations such as this nurses are much more likely to comply and respect the new protocol if they understand why it is being done. By conducting interviews with those involved in research topics we gain a better understanding in terms of what is and what is not working in practice, this information then of course is used to improve quality of care and health outcomes.

One example of a qualitative research design would be a case study of an individual with schizophrenia. Researchers could hold individual interviews with the individual and their family and friends to gain understanding of the individual’s behavior and how meaningful relationships are formed and maintained (Polit & Beck, 2018). Quality of life has become increasingly important, especially for individuals with schizophrenia and other psychological disorders, as an indicator for treatment outcomes (DeRosse, Nitzburg, Blair, & Malhotra, 2018). Having a support system in place, such as meaningful relationships, helps promote good patient outcomes. Analyzing personal relationship formation through interviews would help researchers gain information about the individuals feelings, actions, and intentions (Polit & Beck, 2018). This helps quality of care and health outcomes because of the depth of information that can be gained and either applied to care, such as therapy to improve relationships, or to aid in further research about the subject.
