Project Description:
Choose one artist to research from a curated list of artists whose work
demonstrate significant, unusual or otherwise identifiable mark making and line
quality. Write a one-page paper that discusses the artist’s larger body of work,
but specifically addresses what the student sees as significant or identifiable
about the artist’s mark making and line quality.
Respond to this research through a homework drawing attempting to emulate
some of the qualities of the mark making and line quality through observational
drawing.
Project Objectives:
Students study and analyze significant works of art relevant to the
discipline
Students develop capacities for aesthetic and contextual response,
judgment interpretation and evaluation of that research through written
response
Students demonstrate their interpretations through the use of considered
mark making and line quality in observational drawing
Written component:
Write a minimum one-page paper with appropriate citations or bibliography (in
addition to the one page). Evaluation is based on the writing proficiency,
contextual references, content exploration, and the creative direction. Please
submit your written component along with a sample artist image and image of
your drawing in a single pdf document to Carmen.

Evaluation of Writing Component:
1. Writing Proficiency: quality of grammar, spelling, paragraph
construction, coherency of thought and proper citation of researched
material.
2. Contextual References: Discuss some of the biographical details and
context in which this artist is working, what movements or styles they may
be associated with, and mediums used.
3. Content Exploration: Identify something about their mark making and
line quality that is significant. Use descriptive language to analyze how that
mark making and line quality effects how you interpret the image.4. Creative Direction: How do you write this concise one-page paper and
make it interesting to read? Be creative in the construction of your thoughts
and words.
