The Future of Nursing
Introduction
Nurses are essential healthcare providers in patient management. The evolution of their roles in healthcare has led to the increased involvement of nurses in primary care provision, a trend that is likely to continue in the future.
Statement of the Issue
There is an increased need for highly skilled nurses globally, which has been promoted by diversification of populations, changes in people lifestyles, increased amount of chronic diseases, and lack of adequate licensed professionals to care for patient populations in community settings.
Supporting Evidence
The role of nurses is exponentially going to increase in the future due to the demand for healthcare needs and the limited number of physicians and highly skilled physicians in the current healthcare system. This is evident by the programs set forth by the national government to support and increase nursing education, increase the number of nurses in the workforce, and promote nurses capabilities in managing emerging healthcare needs (Silva, Brault, & Pineault, 2018). Organizations like the Institute of Medicine (IOM) and the Robert Wood Foundation (RWF) proposed increased education and engagement of advanced practice nurses (APRNs) in primary care as a means of finding a solution to this issue (Ogbolu, Ford, Cohn, & Gilespie, 2019). These changes in modern nursing support the idea of projected changes in the future of nursing.
Prediction of Nursing Roles in the Future
As education and scope increases, more nurses are likely to engage in the roles performed by physicians in primary healthcare facilities to reduce the workload in primary care facilities and community centers. Some of the roles that the nurses are likely to take on include having full prescription authority and ability to care for patients without the supervision of physicians (Cote, Freeman, Jean, & Denis, 2019). These roles will help the country meet the healthcare needs of the public.
Conclusion
Increasing the roles of nurses through enhanced education programs and training can bridge the gap in healthcare especially in rural communities. The future of nursing will be characterized by increased participation of nurses in primary care.
