It is now time to write a longer analysis of one of the social issues we have examined. Your assignment in this paper will be to address the significance of Culture in one of the stories or poems we have read so far. You may use any material from the preceding assignments as a starting place if you wish, but now you will have to write a more sustained argument about how one of these issues is important in the piece of literature you choose.
Culture:
Similarly, you could comment on how deep culture or cultural identity are important in a work that we have read. Again, you should avoid simply telling us that it is important or pointing out that culture is a part of what happens in the story. Point out how people think about culture and how it shapes their lives as we see it in the poem or story.
Remember:
Stay focused on making one point about the poem or story. Don’t wander into things about the story that are unrelated.
Stay focused on the work of literature. Don’t give examples from outside the story or poem unless they relate very closely to what the work is saying about the issue you are discussing. No diaries.
Do more than summarize the work of literature. Look exclusively at what the poem or story has to say about the point you make in your thesis.
Make sure that you don’t simply state your opinion about the issue at hand, but instead make a claim about what the poem or story is saying about the issue. Your opinion about the issue is not the point of this paper. In fact, the poem or story may say something about this issue with which you do not agree. Resist the temptation to tell us what you think and make the story fit. Instead, tell us what the story says. Don’t feel bad about this, as we understand you aren’t telling us what you think.
As with the other papers, look closely at the language of the poem to support your point about the issue you are addressing. Quote liberally, and explain why words, phrases, meter, metaphors, etc. are significant in terms of what the poem has to say about the issue you are exploring. The best question to ask is “Why?”
Requirements
The paper should be 750-1000 words, typed, double spaced, in 12 point font with 1″ margins.
Cite at least 3 from the story.
