The story I am going to tell is encapsulated in the Aesop’s Fables from the ancient Greece and is about an honest Woodman and his axe. The story compares two woodmen who have different personalities. Depending on their level of honesty, the consequences also differ. The first woodman is honest and kind which helps him to receive great rewards despite being poor from the God of the river. On the other hand, the second woodman is greedy and selfish which makes him receive nothing as a reward. Instead, a punishment befalls the second man. The story is aimed at passing the moral reason and benefits of being honest and contented with what you have as a basis for even big rewards in life.
The story starts with the first woodman. The man had an axe fitted with a wooden handle and was poor. Every day, the woodman could go to the forest with an axe to cut trees as a way of making a living. One day while at the forest, the woodman lost his axe and while looking for it, the god of the river asked the woodman what he was looking for. The question was to test the honesty of the man. After saying it was an ax that was lost, the god asked the woodman to choose between the three axes including a golden one, wooden, and silver. The first woodman was honest enough to identify the wooden one. Impressed by the honesty the man, the woodman was awarded three golden axes and became even richer.
However, the second woodman was not as honest as the first one. After witnessing the first woodman being rewarded handsomely, the second woodman decided to pretend to have lost an axe. While looking for it, the god asked and did the same test as the first woodman. He asked the second woodman what he was looking for and the man answered it was an axe. When presented with a choice between a wooden, silver and golden axe, the second woodman chose the one that was golden. The god did not offer any reward and told the man hat he as dishonest about the axe and because of that he could not reward him.
The second man was punished because of his greed. Not only did the man not receive any gift but he became even poorer. The god was placed as a supernatural being that had powers to tell between a lie and truth as well a can make a person rich or poor through use of magic. In this case, the dishonesty and selfish desire of the second woodman made him lose a lot because of the desire to reap what he did not sow. As a result, the story of the second woodman compared to the first man presents important comparisons that show the value of being honest and possibility of punishment for telling lies and having selfish desires in life.
In conclusion, the moral lesson of the story is that honesty can have benefits to the individual. The first woodman deserved to be rewarded and made rich because despite being presented with other more valuable axes, he was honest enough to choose the one he had lost and was contented with it. The level of honest contributed significantly into the nature of rewards that he deserved as well. However, the second man witnessed and intentionally planned to lose an axe and ask for the chance to choose an axe. The greediness to choose a bad axe made him to deserve nothing and in addition the punishments. In this way, the moral lesson of being honest is brought out based on the consequence of flying and telling the truth through the comparisons of the two woodmen.
