This piece was written in 1764, as the British had imposed the Sugar Act on the colonies.
In his essay, “The Rights of the British Colonies Asserted and Proved (1764), James Otis wrote about the rights of colonists, men and women, whites and blacks, as British subjects. His premise was, in part, to determine the foundation of government and provide a defense for it. He mentions four possibilities and discounts them. He then argues for another and defends his position. What was that position, and importantly, why?
