Toyota has been successfully able to topple down General Motors to become the world’s leading automobile manufacturer using its Just In Time Production processes, Lean Manufacturing techniques and Total Quality Management (TQM) principles which the firm has implemented across the countries of the world. However, the firm had suffered major setbacks in its operations during 2009-2014 due to various interanl factors like safety issues with vehicles resulting in recalls, centralized decision making, and external factors like earthquakes impacting its production lines etc. All these resulted in challenges to the firm in managing its operations and continuing its successful run as the world’s leading automaker.
Recommendations and Reasoning
1. Make the decision making decentralized to ensure the management of the specific plant or location is able to take decision regarding their issues while following the Toyota Production System in its daily operations.
2. Ensure the firm grows at a medium pace with quality and saftey as the two most important parameters for its products.
3. Provide training and mentorship for the new employees to ensure they get well-equipped with the Toyota way of operations, lean management principles etc.
