Unit 7 Psychology Discussion Responses
As stated form the textbook a bachelor’s degree in psychology cultivates skills that are the foundation for a variety of career paths in the mental health profession, science, and business. (kuther,2015). The career I would choose with a bachelor’s degree in psychology is a Case Manager. Case managers provide advice and counseling to people in difficult situations. They help develope treatment and recovery plans, identify service providers, monitor client progress, and coordinate with other health and human service providers. (career options with a bachelor’s degree in psychology). In this field I feel a big problem I might fall into would be whenand if I have a client that is difficult and or doesn’t follow the treatment plan. It is difficult to want to help someone who doesnt want to help themselves. I would have to make sure I use the skills of ceritical thinking to ensure I think before hand of options that I have to do when I coem in contact with a cleint that may have these traits and use my resources and coluges for help. I must also be compassionate and understanding of human behavior and nature. get to know and learn my client for some if you come on too strong that may push them away, however others may need someone to display a little tough love. My concern will always be to help the client as best as I can.
A positive career choice with my bachelor’s degree is a drug counselor in a rehabilitation center. A difficult situation I can imagine happening in this career is possible bias against a client. For an example a client is a repeat client, who has been in and out of rehab due to a court mandate. Their current time in rehab they are saying they really want to change and are serious this time. One of the five general is Justice which focus on “taking precautions against potential biases” (APA 2017). If I would feel biased against my client, I would need to make sure that I referred my client to a different counselor so they can get the best care that they deserve. Also another conflict can be getting to attached to a client or getting to emotionally involved which could also related to the general principle of Beneficence and Nonmaleficence that states “psychologists strive to be aware of the possible effect of their own physical and mental health on their ability to help those they work with” (APA 2017). I would have to make sure I do not let my own mental health effect the work I am doing with any client.
A positive career I can see myself in that was stated in the text would be a possible drug counselor in a rehab center. One situation that I might encounter in the career is helping someone and seeing their potential in life and knowing that they are much better than drugs, just to watch them relapse. Its a sad situation when a counselors feelings get involved because they see the great potential in the person who was a former addict. To be a drug counselor and eventually grow with the person and have them relapse after all that time its a heartbreaking thing to go through it. What I would use in this situation would be the fidelity and responsibility principle, to show and tell them that they are responsible for their own actions and if they want to continue to do better they need to be responsible and face their fears and the truth and eventually succeed in rehab and go on to live a happy filled life.
A possible career that I would consider is to be a Crisis Intervention counselor. A difficult scenario would be if I were on the job and was presented with a case of a person I knew personally or a family member. This would be difficult because of the close relationship I have with the person and it’s hard not to be bias. Some of the lessons from psychology I would use to address this situation would be research methods and statistical skills, which helps to apply the scientific method to address questions about human behavior (Kuther, T. L., 2015 ). Gathering information helps with identifying the problem and coming to a solution. In addition, effective communication is important because you want to be delicate of the client’s feelings. For example, while counseling some issues maybe delicate and require self-awareness and you want to treat the client and situation with respect. Critical thinking which involves gathering information, evaluating what you have, and concluding possible causes. For example, if you are able to gather information and apply it, it is easier to determine which factors point to the issue, which makes for a better resolution. Lastly, I would say listening is key and overall keeping an open mind. You must be able to listen effectively, being attentive to what is being said shows that you care and you are interested in what is going on. Even though I know the person personally the case would need to be turned over to another counselor to avoid any biases.
With my bachelors degree a career I would consider going into is human services; social work to be more precise. My other choices would be either metal health technician or a child care worker. My goal eventually in the psychology field is to be able to help people. With a bachelors degree, you are still limited to certain things you can and cannot do. I recently watched the documentary on Gabriel Fernandez on Netflix, and it broke my heart to see how flawed our system really is. Gabriel and many other kids like him are the reason I want to go into social work. A difficult scenario that I can encounter would be child abuse that may possible lead to the child dying. As a social worker, if I was to get a case with child abuse, one of the things I would do is sit down and talk with the victim and then their parents. Evaluate the child’s behavior, connect with the child on a level they feel comfortable be it through talking or even drawing. Clinical social workers are able to diagnose, assess, ad come up with a treatment plan. Social workers help families to cope with everyday life. When people feel lost, it is very easy to go down hill without having any support. As a social worker you can guide those individuals back onto the right path, by either working with them on a treatment plan, helping them cope with everyday life stressors with therapy, help them develop new skills or discover skills they may already have, refer them to other specialists, or group therapies, help them get a better job, education, and so on.
