As we turn our focus to using evidence for support, I thought it would be a good idea to consider the important skill of note taking. Whether you paraphrase, summarize or quote information it must be cited properly. Effective note taking can make this process much easier.
When I was in middle school we were taught to take notes on 3” x 6” note cards. We would put our note on one side and then the full reference listing of the source on the other side. Technology has come a long way since then! Microsoft has a product called One Note that brings note taking into the 21st century. There is also a product called Evernote that is available for smartphone and tablet devices. One great advantage to note taking software is that it is very searchable. For example, if you are writing a draft of an essay and know you want to move onto a paragraph about solar power, you could then quickly do an electronic search of your notes to bring up any information on that topic.
