Each year, researchers identify top ethical and moral issues in that year’s “current workplace.” Some common items on this list are harassment and bullying; employee theft and violating company Internet and technology use policies. Ethical issues and dilemmas surface due to deviant behavior. Deviant behavior ranges from sarcasm to the taking of someone’s life, and a whole range of behaviors in between. Largely, these issues fall under the category of “civility.”
For this assignment, please focus on workplace civility (Taylor & Pattie, 2014). Discuss the different forms of incivility that may occur at work and provide examples. Address how incivility affects relationships and work productivity. Referring to Bandura (1999) discuss how uncivil people justify their behavior that has negative consequences and how negative behavior can spread through an organization and its culture. What are the implications for corporate social responsibility if organizational culture is infused with incivility and negativity? How might a manager deal with uncivil workplace behavior? Recommend how managers can stop the uncivil behavior before it starts. In this assignment, refer back to the Week 3 assignment on engagement. How might a manager engage a worker, build ownership, and move toward more collegial workplace relationships and healthier conflict management?
