What are some effective strategies to motivate dispersed team members in a virtual setting? What are some emerging trends that deal with this challenge in your field? Provide an example
Answer: In my organization we use telemedicine within our school based team. Our group has really enjoyed the virtual side of having a doctor or nurse practitioner at their hands when at work. “A common use of telemedicine is to bring medical specialists into rural and underserved areas via videoconferencing” (Mackert & Whitten, 2007, p. 328). The registered nurses still round schools and are visible and always available through our work telephones. The medical assistants do not feel isolated in that aspect. One way our practice manager has tried to keep the team motivated is through creating number goals for them. She also states for them to use the system for when questions come up within the team, this way they can see each other and communicate the problem visually.
The only challenge we face is from connectivity issues. The connection will be spotty, one of the connectors may not pare to the computer, or taking longer than expected for the nurse practitioner or doctor to enter the virtual room. These problems can create frustration within the team, but I always try to reassure my assistants as well as alternative options for any issue that may arise. One solution to our problem with connectivity is through dropping hard lines in all of our schools. These hard lines also keep the organization within HIPAA rules and regulations. We also try and do training within the group at least once a year, usually during the summer, to make sure everyone within the group is still connecting and working well with their equipment.
