1. How are quality of conformance and quality of design related to one another? Can a product achieve quality of design but not quality of conformance? Can the converse be true? 2. How does the concept of quality of design help explain why a product can be very successful in one country, but the same product can fail in another country’s market? 3. Does a product’s price influence the customer’s perception or expectation of a product, or both? In any of these cases, is it a positive or negative influence? 4. What purpose do quality awards serve, beyond their role as a prize to the winning organization? What value can an award program provide organizations that have yet to even compete for that award?

1. The quality of design is intricately linked to the quality of conformance. By ensuring that the designing of the product is as per the specifications required by the customer, a high degree of quality of design is obtained. And by ensuring that the production processes are controlled properly with necessary set points, the product finally manufactured comply with the quality of design and achieve a high degree of quality of conformance.
It may be possible for a product to achieve high quality of design and not high quality of conformance as the production process may be flawed which might result in defective products being manufactured in spite of high quality of design intended for the product.
The converse cannot be true that there is a high quality of conformance in spite of a low quality of design.
2. The quality of design ensures that the ratings, specifications and fitness of use of a product are as per the product requirements of the user. So if the quality of design suits one set of customers and not the other set, then it is quite possible that a product is successful in the country wherein specifications are met and not so successful where specifications are out of order.
3. Yes definitely. In most cases, the price of a product gives a perception and expectation of the product quality. For example a premium priced product is usually associated with superior quality and a lower price product is associated with low quality. So it can be seen that the impact of price on expectation of quality is generally positive.
4. Quality awards serve to motivate the employees to maintain high quality standards. They also act as tools of certification which basically proves that the organization has been successful in implementing quality management systems to maintain and improve quality of products and services. It also act as useful tools for benchmarking a company’s quality standard versus the competition.
The value that a quality award brings for an organization which is yet to compete is that it provides the following:
Inspiration for the employees to reach a desired state
Set quantifiable objectives to improve quality
Access industry benchmarks with regards to quality
