Below are four tips pregnant women should do to reduce their chances of a low-birth-weight baby. Firstly, expectant mothers can significantly reduce the risk of having very low birth weight babies if they maintain good nutrition especially at the beginning of their pregnancy, by increasing their intake of folic acid which is found in whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. Nutritional food provides plenty of vitamins and minerals that help the baby to grow healthy and strong. Secondly, pregnant women should maintain proper prenatal care throughout their pregnancy. Expectant mothers should start prenatal care early because it helps to detect early any medical problem. Thirdly, avoid drug and alcohol abuse. Expectant mothers should refrain from smoking or being around people who smoke so that toxins don’t enter into the baby’s delicate system. Ensuring that pregnant women is kept away from tobacco smoke will limit her chances of giving birth to a low birth weight baby. Lastly, keep pre-existing medical illnesses under control.

According to CDC the five examples of prevention measures for reducing material and infant mortality would be:

Before Conception

  • Women should go to the doctors and get check for any health issues or chronic condition such as diabetes, hypertension, and sexually transmitted diseases. They should get help and learn about how to take care of the newborn baby before it arrives through the family planning services. Women should also learn the foods and the nutrients such that infants to have for it to survive. Women are recommended to eat a large amount of foods that have folic acid which is good for the infant. Women should avoid drugs and alcohol as well.

During pregnancy

  • Women need to be provided with high amount of care throughout pregnancy, labor, and delivery. They also need to be monitor every time, they need to be vaccinated from the influenza. they need to be informed about the early steps of pregnancy where they will feel the infant kicking or moving.

During postpartum period

  • After the infant is born make sure he or she is vaccinated at the right age and time in order to prevent illnesses.
  • Help the Mother understand the process of breastfeeding and how they should breast feed their child.

Shanice Thomas S6: DBQ #3:

Maternal, infant and child health encompasses the health of women of childbearing age from pre-pregnancy through pregnancy, labor , delivery and the postpartum period, and the health prior to and up to adolescence. Improving the well being of mothers, infant and children is an important public health goal for the US. Their well-being determines the health of the next generation and can help predict future public health challenges for families, communities and the health care system. Their health is important because pregnancy can provide an opportunity to identify existing health risks in women and to prevent future health problems for women and their children. These health risks include: hypertension, heart disease, depression, unhealthy weight, genetic conditions etc. Many factors can affect pregnancy and childbirth including: preconception health status, age, access to preconception, prenatal and inter conception health care and poverty. Infant and child health are similarly influenced by sociodemographic and behavioral factors, such as education, family income, and breast feeding, but are also linked to the physical and mental health of parents and caregivers.
