Rationale: While it may seem that the artifact speaks for itself, the individuals who are looking at your portfolio may have little experience with early childhood administration. Know your audience — they might need further explanation to understand the significance of the portfolio.
The rationale should be written in declarative and direct language. The rationale should indicate what outcome is being addressed through the artifact presented and how the artifact specifically links to the outcome. Use language that clearly reflects the outcome without copying word for word. Outcomes are general, but your artifact is specific. You cannot simply state that the artifact shows you can do something or understand something; you have to explain how the evidence demonstrates you have met the outcome.
You should create a rationale for each piece of evidence you present; however, you may use more than one piece of evidence for an outcome, making sure your rationale aligns.
Building Your Rationale
Section 1: Introduce the artifact or experience:
- Tell what the artifact is and the name of the artifact.
- Tell what class you created it for or describe the field experience.
Section 2: Explain/justify how the artifact meets the standard:
- Explain what the assignment or activity was that had you create the artifact.
- Tell why this artifact best aligns with the specific program outcome.
- Explain what you learned by doing the assignment or activity and creating the artifact.
Section 3: Conclusion of what you learned from doing the assignment or activity and creating the artifact:
- Reflect on how you might implement or utilize this artifact in your future practice.
- Identify any changes you will make to the artifact based on what you learned from the experience.
