Self-Care Plan: The challenges to personal and professional self-care

Component 1: awareness of the issues

Being aware of the existing issues should help me plan so that I allocate the required time to finding a solution while at the same time, put my needs first so that I can stay balanced throughout the process. The challenge however, revolves around my need to sacrifice my personal time and effort, in order to make sure that my recipient is comfortable. Along the way, I encounter burnout and as such, I am left with little energy and motivation to keep going. On the other hand, there is the option of asking colleagues for help, but if chances are slim, it puts pressure on me to ensure that I achieve the goal to deliver satisfaction (Tipton, 2017).

There is also the idea of accomplishing everything at once, and resting later, which at times backfires, leaving me reeling from the consequences. Another challenge remains with staying competent, as is mandated by the profession’s policies, as well as the institution’s goal and mission.

Component 2: self-assessment

Self-assessment requires that I carry out an evaluation of self, to establish my ability to meet the requirements of the issue. This I can only ascertain based on how much knowledge I have concerning the matter. From this, I can determine how much effort I need to learn what I need to know (Tipton, 2017). Self-assessment will help me in measuring the options that I have in gathering the knowledge that I need. This should help me with measuring the choices I have when it comes to making decisions on the situation as well as assessing my ability to come up with a realistic plan, and action, where I should also evaluate my capacity. The challenge here lies with determining my capacity and finding ways to ensure that I measure up to expectations. As such, I find myself questions such as how much I need to give as well as where I need to go for help and whether I will receive the assistance I need on time in order to meet the set conditions.

Component 3: an action plan for your own self-care

An action plan for my own self-care involves finding balance between my professional life and private life. It involves beginning with a mind mapping exercise to consider my internal plan and mental models for the issues at hand. As such, it would involve the following processes. a) Awareness to conduct a self-examination on myself to find out the areas where I lack balance. Upon learning this, I would be able to work around them to ensure that I do not oppress myself deeper, and at the same time, find a way to bring balance accordingly.

b) Knowledge would helps with measuring the available options to deal with my imbalanced case. The value of collecting as much information as I can is to increase my chances at brainstorming the issues for my personal sake (Tipton, 2017). c) Decision making follows knowledge and is determined by how much I know and how I can apply it towards finding an amicable solution to the issues, which is doable through d) planning. Planning from rich knowledge should help me place the right decisions suitably. e) Taking action involves applying my plan to the found solution that should allow me the self-care I need.

Component 4: an action plan where you as a leader, manage, lead, and coach colleagues in prioritizing their own self-care

As a leader, I need to help my colleagues with prioritizing their own self-care. As such, there is great importance in teaching them about thinking and cognition. Tipton (2017) argues that mastering self-knowledge thought helps with developing one’s private as well as professional life. I would therefore be keen in helping them examine themselves by looking at how they think as individuals, and why they think they way they do. I would therefore challenge them to consider applying logic, abstract thought, consideration, self-awareness, emotional knowledge, learning, communication, creativity, planning, memory, and problem solving. With these factors, the team should be able to apply these when making decisions, and consulting each other or myself to find a workable solution. The most significant of them according to Tipton (2017) would be upholding teamwork, with consideration for each other.

Component 5: challenges presented to personal and professional self-care.

The challenges of self-care when it comes to personal and professional life lies with a person’s inability to plan, and take charge of their life, besides that of the need to stay competent in the job and meet the needs of the client as well as those of the institution. Professionally, there is the challenge of when does a subordinate determine and exercise his or her own personal control to regulate his or her own self-care. If the demands of the job require that the individual works on, then there is no option but to keep working. From a personal point of view, there is the issue of when does the individual decide to postpone work to maintain self-care. If there are no alternative options, then chances are that the individual will forego this leisure in favor of the professional demands.
