There is a surprising amount of technology used in ancient garden designs and their construction. Namely, water moving techniques. For grand designs such as the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, which didn’t really hang, but were terraced to appear as though they did, water had to be taken from the lower levels to the top in order for the waterfalls to keep running. There are no ruins of this garden nor have any ever been discovered. We do have legend and the story of why these gardens were built is something even a modern man can identify with. Water produced by snow melt was transferred through long pipeline-like courses under the desert floor, routed by walls to protect developed areas from high river levels during flood seasons and eventually through the aqueducts that were built by the Romans. At some point it was all about man power and other devices used to lift the water to its desired location. We have the benefit of modern controlled irrigation which can now be directed from a well, municipal service, pressurized by pumps and scheduled to run sprinklers by a computer on a desk. Amazing what a few thousand years can do!
