Michael, the teacher in a Grade One classroom, is finding it hard to communicate with a newly arrived refugee family from Syria who have enrolled their six-year-old son, Farid. Farid speaks three languages including English with a good level of understanding, and is learning to read and write in English.

Farid sits at a table with Hudson and Grace and sometimes they can be seen laughing at his accent. However, other times they work well together and are able to complete their learning tasks. Farid is very quiet and has made friends with another child, Macey, and they are often seen together outside in the playground.

Requirements

Follow Steps 1–5 to complete this assignment. In your submission, include the headings for each of the steps and follow the approximate word allocations for each section to guide your process.

Step 1: Analysis of the scenario in relation to theoretical perspectives (Team: 250 words)

In 8.5 Team discussion: Assignment 3 – Step 1Links to an external site.Links to an external site., with your allocated team members, you will collaboratively reflect on your understanding of the key issues in the scenario.

What concerns are presented in the scenario? Consider the children, teachers and families.Which of the seven theories encountered in this unit might offer the best lens through which to understand what is happening in this scenario? Why? Explain your thinking. What are the benefits and limitations of the theory you think best explains what is happening in this scenario? What factors may be affecting the learning environment in this scenario, and how could the environment be improved?Step 2: Apply a theoretical perspective to the scenario (Individual: 400 words)

In 9.5 Activity: Assignment 3 – Step 2Links to an external site., you will choose one of the seven theories explored in the unit to apply to the scenario. This summary will be shared with your team members in Step 3.

For your chosen theory:

Write a brief summary of the theory.Apply the theory to the scenario and provide examples and descriptions of how children would learn if this theory underpinned the teacher’s practice.Define and describe specific teaching strategies informed by your theory that could support learning. For example, ‘According to a post-structuralist paradigm or perspective, children learn through…’, or, ‘Teachers’ strategies within this perspective would include…’. Step 3: Review and compare theoretical perspectives to the scenario (Team: 200 words)

You will complete this section in a small team discussion board, 10.5 Team discussion: Assignment 3 – Step 3Links to an external site.. Share your work in Step 2 with your team. Together with your team, decide which of the theories you have shared offers the most effective solution to the scenario and explain why by giving some examples. There is no right or wrong theory here.

Step 4: Write an improved scenario (Individual: 300 words)

Using the new understanding gained in Step 3, write an improved scenario that meets the learning requirements of all the children through the lens of your team’s selected theory.

Ensure that your new scenario:

aligns with your team’s selected theoryenables learning for all the childrenincludes factors that contribute to effective learning environments (such as time, resources and space)includes teaching tools and strategies that align with your team’s selected theory.Step 5: Reflection (Individual component: 350 words)

Reflect on your experience working on this task and your learning in this unit.Include the following in your reflection:

Identify your key learnings and any benefits or challenges you encountered during this experience and during this task. What worked? What didn’t work? How could you link this back to a teaching theory?Make comparisons between your learning, what you now understand about learning theories, and how you now view the role of the teacher.Step 6: Appendix (record of collaboration)

Include an appendix (maximum 2 pages) that demonstrates you have  met Criteria 1: Team collaborating. Screenshots of conversations are sufficient.

Note: Throughout your assignment be sure to use in-text citations and provide a reference list.
