allowing slavery to expand into the new territories

Group E will argue in support of allowing slavery to expand into the new territories. Note that one of the key elements in this debate is that the nation was preparing to build a trans-continental railroad. You live near a little town called Lafayette, Louisiana and live in a four-room dogtrot. You own 3 good old houn’ dawgs…and go huntin’ with your good friend Marcel Ledbetter. You own NO slaves and barely making a living catching gators for their hides, catching “ersters” because the rich folk love to eat ‘em in New Orleans, and catching crawdads for ya’ll to eat at home. As good as your life is, ya’ll have decided to move westward toward the mountains in Colorado Territory near a gol-busting town called Cripple Creek. Mebbe gold and sliver diggin’ might be so good that you ken move back to Looz-e-anner and get a bigger place to live and maybe own a slave. Maybe. But now you heard that a gol-darned Yankee for Iller-nois, Mister Linkum, wants to not let you go out there because you might takes SLAVES! That’s being a dictator, just like King George III, and by golly, you won’t STAND for that. In this scenario, your last name has been changed, you may select any one of the following three Cajun names as your last name: Cambre (pronounced Comm), Boudreaux (pronounced Boo-dro) or Thibideaux (pronounced Tib-uh-doh). Assume the role.

The Ethical Web, Camus’ The Plague, and COVID-19

Objective: Write a persuasive, analytical essay of 1000-1250 words, demonstrating that you have joined this critical discussion on ethics in the time of coronavirus. Present and support your view clearly, with concrete, developed examples.
Prompt: To what extent do you agree or disagree with Todd May’s concept of the ethical web in his article, “What is Making You Stay at Home Right Now?” Why do you agree, or why do you disagree? How do you see yourself, in the midst of this pandemic, engaging with and exemplifying the ethical assumptions that May bases his argument on? Your answer to these questions will be the foundation of your thesis.
Requirements:
Incorporate May’s article and Camus’ The Plague to explore and support your thesis.
Include a Works Cited page with the MLA entries for the Todd May article and The Plague.
Structure: Below is a structure that might be helpful for you to use.
In your introduction, please introduce the concept of the ethical web, and make a claim (your thesis) stating the extent to which you agree or disagree with May. I suggest writing your introduction AFTER you have written the body of your essay—because you might not know exactly what you think until you have written your thoughts out in the body.

For your first page or so, evaluate May’s article—focus on his thesis and major supporting points. Make sure also to identify and evaluate the explicit and implicit assumptions in the article, including those assumptions that May disagrees with. Connect back to your own thesis at the end of this section.

For your second page or so, use Camus’ The Plague to explore May’s concept in greater depth by explaining the position the novel takes on the idea of the ethical web. That is, how much do you think the novel agrees or disagrees with May? Use specific evidence and quotation from The Plague to support your points. Connect back to your thesis at the end of this section.

Close the essay with a conclusion that rehearses the points you have made and discusses the implications of your thesis for the future.

Company Valuation – Google

In this assignment you will

Calculate the intrinsic value of the company by conducting a two-stage DCF company-level valuation analysis,
Compare your results to the current market capitalization of the company and
Perform a sensitivity analysis.
The requirements of the assignment are as follows:

Calculate the Intrinsic Value of Your Company:
You will use the two-stage company-level Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) valuation model to calculate the intrinsic value of your chosen company.
Calculate the Free Cash Flow based on most recent fiscal year data:
Estimate the free cash flows (FCF) available to the firm. To do this you can use the below formula:
FCF = Cash Flow from Operations – Capital Expenditures + Interest * (1 – Tax Rate)

The “Cash Flow from Operations” and “Capital Expenditures” can be found on the Statement of Cash Flows in Yahoo! Finance.
The Interest expense (if any exists) is on the Income Statement.
The Tax Rate can be calculated based on the Tax Expense and Net income (as was performed in the first course project).
For additional details on these calculations please refer to this external resource.
Specify the WACC
For the discount value you should use the weighted average cost of capital (WACC). You can either use the value you calculated from the prior course project assignment or you can use the value generated by the website www.thatswacc.com.
Conduct a two-stage valuation
You can now combine the two items above to estimate a present value of the firm. You should calculate a high-growth phase value and a terminal value.
High Growth Phase Value: For this phase, assume that in years 1 – 3 the Free Cash Flows are growing by 8% annually.
Terminal Value: For this phase assume the FCF grow at a constant growth rate of 2.5%.
Calculate the present values of the above phases and add them together for the total present value of the company.
Comparison to Current Market Capitalization:
On the Key Statistics page in Yahoo! Finance identify and indicate the Market Capitalization (“market cap”). What does this value represent?
Compare the market cap to your calculated value.
To compare the market cap from Yahoo! Finance to the firm value you calculated in the previous section above you need to first subtract the value of the debt from your firm value calculation.
How does your intrinsic value (less debt) compare to the market cap of the company on Yahoo! Finance?
What might account for any differences between these two values?
Conduct a Sensitivity Analysis:
Vary the following inputs to the two-tier valuation model and indicate the new valuation amount and the percentage change from the above “base” case.
Free Cash Flows
Increase the FCF by 10%
Decrease the FCF by 10%
Terminal Growth Rate
Increase the Terminal Growth Rate from 2.5% to 3.5%
Decrease the Terminal Growth Rate from 2.5% to 1.5%
WACC
Add 2% to the WACC (that is if the WACC is 7.5% make it 9.5%)
Subtract 2% from the WACC (that is if the WACC is 7.5% make it 5.5%)
Observations
State your observations from the sensitivity analysis. How important (conceptually) is the terminal growth rate to overall value? How important is the WACC to overall value?
(Optional) Conduct an Industry Comparable Valuation Analysis:
In chapter 4 we saw how to conduct a stock valuation by the “comparable” methodology. Selecting two of the competitors you identified in the first course project assignment apply this methodology to calculate the value of your company’s equity.
How do the results compare relative to your intrinsic valuation in part 1 of this assignment and with the listed market capitalization of the company that you found on Yahoo! Finance?
Paper Mechanics
Assignments should be written in a professional manner. The writer demonstrates a good grasp of standard writing conventions (e.g., grammar, capitalization, punctuation, usage, spelling, paragraphing) and uses conventions effectively to enhance readability.

ENG 102 Poetry Explication Essay #2

ENG 102 Poetry Explication Essay #2

Focus of the essay:

The poetry explication essay will focus on a line-by-line or stanza-by-stanza analysis of your chosen poem that we read in our poetry unit. It must analyze at least 5 or more poetic devices in the poem.

Length of essay:

Aim for approximately 3 pages, double-spaced, 12 pt. font Times New Roman. The number of paragraphs will range from 5-8, including an introduction, body, and conclusion.

Format of the essay:

The essay must adhere to the guidelines of MLA style, 8th edition. Visit the Purdue OWL website online for guidelines on formatting the body of the essay and citing sources in MLA style. The only source that you will need for this first essay is the text of the short story itself (a primary source). No other sources should be consulted!

How to Write the Introduction:

Begin with an opening lead (brief anecdote (story); a quotation from story or another source; a reference to a current issue, event, or problem that leads to your thesis; a shocking, clever, or amusing generalization (fact) about life that relates to the essay’s main point).

Next, state the title of the poem and author and brief synopsis of the poem

Connect between the plot synopsis and thesis statement: narrow into your main point for the essay.

Finally, state the thesis statement: the controlling idea or the claim that you are making about the poem’s message.

How to Write the Body Paragraphs:

In the body paragraphs, analyze at least 5 of the following poetic devices:

  • Structure (rhyme scheme, rhythm, or free verse, unique use of line)
  • Speaker or Narrator
  • Setting and Conflict (if a narrative poem)
  • Mood and Sound Devices that contribute to the mood, such as Alliteration, Assonance, Onomatopoeia
  • Symbol
  • Metaphor, Simile, or Personification (Figurative Language)
  • Imagery
  • Diction and Connotation
  • Irony

The first body paragraph will analyze the structure of the poem, meaning the rhyme scheme, rhythm, features of stanza or line, and sound devices, such as alliteration, assonance, and onomatopoeia.

After the first body paragraph, each body paragraph will analyze the next set of lines in the poem until all lines in the poem have been analyzed. The number of body paragraphs will be determined by both how many lines are analyzed in each body paragraph and the total number of lines in the poem. The entire poem should be quoted and analyzed in this essay.

Each body paragraph will follow this pattern: Topic sentence (T), Introduce a quote from the poem (I), Quote a set of lines from the poem (Q), Analyze the poetic devices that apply to the quote and how the devices contribute to the poem’s theme (A), Transition to the next quote (T), Introduce the next quote from the poem (I), Quote a set of lines from the poem (Q), Analyze the poetic devices that apply to the quote and how the devices contribute to the poem’s theme (A).

Sample quote of two lines of poetry. Place a slash / between two lines of poetry:

“Come live with me and be my love,/  And we will all the pleasure prove’” (Marlowe lines 1-2).

When quoting dialogue within the poem, use single quotation marks to indicate a quote within the quote:

“We wave gaily to the arm. ‘When I hear/ trains at night I dream of being president,’/ I say dreamily…” (lines 10-11)

Depending on the length of your chosen poem, a body paragraph may need anywhere from 2-4 quotes. Ultimately, each body paragraph should help support and prove the thesis statement, the main claim of the essay.

How to Write the Conclusion:

Begin the conclusion with a signal word (but avoid the expression, “In conclusion,” because it’s cliché) and thesis summary, a completely new re-wording of and more in-depth re-statement of your original thesis statement.

Then focus the bulk of the concluding paragraph on putting together the ideas that have been presented in the essay and their significance to the poem’s theme or message. Show the connections among the ideas presented in the body of the essay.

End with a clincher—a final observation, an application to today’s world, or a call to further research or study—that is meaningful and interesting. Slow down and make each word count because the clincher statement is the last thought that you are leaving with your reader.

Constructing the Thesis Statement:

The thesis statement makes a claim about the poem’s message and should include key poetic devices that will be explored in the poetry explication essay.

Sample thesis statement, including poetic devices and theme:

The structure, point of view, allusion, diction and tone in “Hazel Tells Laverne” signify the myth of the American Dream for lower class Americans.

Note: This thesis statement argues that upward mobility is not a reality for the lower classes and that Hazel knows this is so. She believes fairy tales and princesses are for the upper classes. Think: What might a thesis statement that argues the opposite say?

Making the General Outline:

Fill out the outline below. Begin with the thesis statement and at least three topic sentences for your body paragraphs. The topic sentences must support the thesis statement.

Title of Poem: _________________________________________________________

Thesis statement = poetic devices and claim about the theme (Note: Use Action verbs such as “shows,” “causes,” “reveals,” “highlights,”  “forms,” “contrasts with,” etc.)

Write Thesis statement here:
