Competition Case: JUUL and the Vaping Revolution

Despite unprecedented growth and success as a start-up, in recent years, JUUL has faced mounting pressure as outside observers have questioned how much of its stunning growth has been generated by adult smokers switching to e-cigarettes, and how much by nonsmoking teens adopting JUUL as a fashionable new drug. Additionally, new evidence emerged linking vaping to a spate of mysterious respiratory illnesses and deaths in the U.S., causing federal, state, and local regulators to begin placing increased pressure on JUUL Labs and other e-cigarette companies.

Your team is a cross-disciplinary business unit within JUUL Labs, with members representing the leadership of different functions such as data analytics, finance, accounting, marketing, management, and design. Given that the company was ostensibly founded to reduce the harm of smoking, your team has been asked to put together recommendations to JUUL’s leadership team on what more the company could do to prevent misuse of its products, restore its reputation, and grow its business more successfully.

Within your presentation, you’ve been asked to:
1. Begin with an analysis of our responsibilities as a company – to our shareholders, our customers, and society – taking into account our company’s vision and mission statement;
2. Provide an overview of what more our company can do moving forward to prevent misuse of our products, considering actions we’ve already taken;
3. Recommend how our company should move in light of current or projected industry regulations;
4. Present a strategy to build our reputation in the face of mounting pressure; and
5. End with a plan for growing our business more successfully in the near future.

Select and answer one of the following prompts:
Option 1: JUUL Labs SWOT Analysis

After reading the case, review how to conduct a SWOT analysis using the following articles:
SWOT Analysis: What It Is and When to Use It by BusinessNewsDaily (https://www.businessnewsdaily.com/4245-swot-analysis.html)
The Structure of a Good SWOT from Strategic Management Insight (https://strategicmanagementinsight.com/tools/swot-analysis-how-to-do-it.html)
Then, create a table analyzing JUUL’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats.
After thinking through the SWOT analysis, answer the following questions:
1. Looking at the weaknesses and threats you identified above, what do you believe JUUL should do to position itself well as a company in the face of mounting pressure?
2. Looking at the strengths and opportunities you identified above, where do you believe JUUL has the greatest potential for growth?
3. Looking back to JUUL Labs’ early years, how did their strategic choices enhance or endanger their future?
4. What tensions do leaders face between their fiduciary duty to create sustainable economic value and their responsibilities to customers and society?
5. How do your personal values lead you toward or away from a lucrative opportunity that may potentially cause harm to one segment of society while potentially benefitting another?

ECON 510: Quiz 3 (take-home)

1
ECON 510: Quiz 3 (take-home)
Student’s Name: Student’s I.D.: 1. This is an individual assignment. You are not allowed to discuss between each other. 2. You can use whatever material you want. 3. The deadline is: 6 PM 2 May (Saturday). 4. Submit via: https://forms.gle/BtsweZeHKJr3UF5s9
Problem 1. Screening: Consider the market for used cars. There are lemons (low quality cars) and cream puffs (high quality cars). You are provided with the following valuations of buyers and sellers of each type:
Value to Seller
Value to Buyer
Lemon
1
3
Cream Puff
7
13
The value to the buyer represents the maximum price she will pay for a car of the given type. Assume buyers are risk neutral. (e.g. if a car has a ½ probability of being a lemon and a ½ probability of being a cream puff the buyer would be willing to pay at most ½*3 + ½*13 = 8.) The seller’s valuation is the minimum price for which she will sell the car.
a. Suppose there is only one price for cars. Compute the maximum proportion of lemons that the market can sustain (i.e. so that cars of both types will be traded)?
b. Now car inspection is possible for a fee, and different prices are allowed for each type: P_cream puff=11, P_lemon=2. The inspector’s word is always taken as true. If the inspector says a car is a lemon, the buyer believes her. But the sellers know that the inspector is only right 90% of the time when inspecting a cream puff and 80% of the time when inspecting a lemon. What fee, if any, can be set that will allow the two types of cars to separate themselves (i.e. buyers willing to buy lemons at the lemon price, and sellers willing to sell at that price; and the same for cream puffs)?
Problem 2. Screening: In class, we considered price discrimination via quality. The same model also works for price discrimination via lump sum discount (buy more at a lower price per unit). Consider a small yogurt shop that sells fresh-made yogurt to customers. The shop owner is facing two types of customers and is currently designing a price menu and want to max. expected revenue by giving a larger discount to the customers who buy more.
 Buyer’s utility function is given by: 𝑢(𝑣,𝑞,𝑡)=𝑣⋅𝑞−𝑝⋅𝑞
 In which:
o Her willingness to pay for quality: 𝑣∈{1,2}.
o q: quantity of yogurt she is going to buy
o p: the price she has to pay for each unit she buys
 Seller has cost of production for each customer: 𝑐(𝑞)=𝑞2
 The profit is given by: 𝑝⋅𝑞− 𝑐(𝑞)
 Seller does not know buyer’s willingness to pay but knows the distribution:
𝑃𝑟𝑜𝑏(𝑣=1)=45; 𝑃𝑟𝑜𝑏(𝑣=2)=15 .
Solve for the second degree price discrimination pricing strategy. [Hint: Seller wants the low type to participate and does not want high type to pretend to be low type.]
2
Problem 3. Adverse Selection and Insurance:
In Clintonia, every citizen has a wealth of 16 and a utility represented by 𝑈(𝐼) =√𝐼 . Clintonians occasionally get sick, and when they do, they go to the hospital and are made immediately better. A hospital visit costs 16. There are two types of Clintonians and each has a different probability of getting sick (types are genetic and cannot be changed):
Type
Probability of Illness
Vegetarian
0.25
Smoker
0.75
a. In the absence of health insurance, find the expected utility of each type of Clintonian.
b. A private health plan, Green Cross, is set up. Membership is optional, but since everyone is risk averse, the managers assume that everybody will join (for an insurance with full coverage). Green Cross sets their premiums according to the chance that an average Clintonian gets sick (Green Cross cannot distinguish between types). Assume there are equal proportions of each type in the population. What is the actuarial fair premium (i.e., the insurance policy at which the insurance company breaks even)?
c. If Green Cross charges the actuarial fair rate, will every type of Clintonian join the plan? What is the expected utility for each type?
d. After the 1st year of operation, Green Cross finds they have lost money. Why? They commission a study to discover the probability that a member of Green Cross gets sick. What is the probability? They fix a new actuarial fair premium based on their study. What is the new rate? Who joins the plan in the 2nd year?
e. Suppose now that Green Cross gets smart and offers two plans. The first plan is based on the plan in (d). Call it Plan I. The second plan offers a co-payment system (Plan II). For 3, Plan II pays 5 if an individual gets sick and the individual pays the rest. Who buys which plan? Why? Are these plans sustainable (i.e. the firm is not losing money)? How does this strategy solve the asymmetric information problem?
h. Suppose now the government comes up with a plan that mandates health insurance. What rate will be charged (the rate will be the same for everyone and the government covers its costs)? Who gains and who loses under this plan versus the plan in (g) (i.e. who votes for the plan)?
j. Suppose now that Steven Segal invents a new method to quit smoking (“boot-to-the-head therapy”). This therapy is so effective that it overcomes all genetic predisposition to smoke. For a cost of only 10 you never become sick again (probability of getting sick becomes zero). If the private plan is in effect (people can choose Plan I or Plan II), will smokers undergo the Segal therapy? Suppose the government plan is in effect, will smokers undergo the therapy? Explain.
Problem 4. Stackelberg Competition
Suppose the market of fried chicken is dominated by two oligopolists: Macdonald and KFC.
The inverse demand function is: P=20-Q.
Production cost of Macdonald is: 2Qm2 .
Production cost of KFC is: Qk .
Suppose Macdonald is the first mover. Find the equilibrium of the Stackelberg game.
3
Problem 5: Moral Hazard (Principal-Agent Problem)
Consider a firm that hires people to load and unload shipping trucks. The company cannot perfectly observe whether each individual worker works or shirks (i.e., not do their job), all the firm can observe has an insignificant effect on the overall outcome for the firm. The firm does however care about the effort level of their pool of workers so they do want to induce them to actually work. Due to the fact that the single worker has no measurable impact on the outcome for the firm, the company cannot make wage offers contingent upon the outcome. The only thing a firm can do is to offer a fixed wage and then fire any worker they observe to be shirking. Their observation is imperfect though and so the firm only observes a worker shirking with some probability. The firm also occasionally makes mistakes and even fires workers who were working. The structure of the game is that:
(1) the firm offers a wage contract,
(2) the worker choose to accept or reject (if they reject they receive some level of reservation utility 𝑢̅=10 and the firm receives 0),
(3) If the worker chose to shirk he is fired with probability p=0.5 and has no effort cost while if the worker did not shirk there is no chance that he will be fired, but he pays an effort cost e=5.
(4) If a worker gets fired, he does not receive his wage but instead receive his reservation utility of 𝑢̅=10. The utility for a worker in any state is simply the wage he receives less the cost of any effort.
Assume the firm’s revenues are such that they can profitably pay the wage required to induce high effort but they lose money if all their workers shirk.
a. Begin with a simpler case in which we will assume that the firm could actually contract on effort level. What wage contract would the firm offer to a worker if the firm wants to elicit high effort?
For the following parts, reassert all the original structure under the assumption that effort level is unobservable!
b. What are the conditions that must be satisfied to elicit high effort?
1. What is the lowest wage that satisfies IR condition?
2. What is the lowest wage that satisfies both conditions?
3. Do the wages you found in b.1 and b.2 differ. If yes, why? If no, why? (Briefly explain it).
c. (*Small bonus question) Besides firing a person who shirks, what else can the firm when designing contracts in order to elicit high effort? Be very brief.

SOLUTIONS to the environmental problems

Hi all,

Let’s bring as many examples as possible. Feel free to relate personal observations, and add and add external resources to the discussion (you can embed images, websites, even videos).

this is the most important and most fascinating forum for me, and I bet for many of you as well. Here we can connect everything we learned about organisms, about ecosystems, and now view it from the perspective of vulnerability to disturbance, and sustainability.

Key concepts to consider are:

-Resistance versus resilience of an ecosystem against stress and disturbance.

-Carrying capacity of an ecosystem.

-Sustainable use of a resource.

-Population dynamics and conservation

-Keystone species and tipping points in ecosystems.

And there are case studies and particular examples you can elaborate on. Ideally you can use case studies as examples to illustrate the above (and other) concepts:

-overfishing

-deforestation

-land pollution

-“forever chemicals”

-ocean pollution

-oil pollution

-carbon emissions

-climate change

The TRICKY thing in this forum is to stay focused on the science. It does not help much to submit a post that describes what humans do to destroy the environment and how outraged we all are about it.

Instead, what I’d ask of you is to explain the biological principles, and if at all possible outline SOLUTIONS to the environmental problems.

Our book is a bit useless for conservation. It only lists environmental problems, but offers no solutions. by now we have amazing solutions. So you’ll need to research the up to date remedies online.

here is a recent article you can discuss if you are interested. It is about environmental policy being subject to politics: E.P.A., Citing Coronavirus, Drastically Relaxes Rules for Polluters (Links to an external site.)

This forum has awide range of topics: You can talk about biology, ecology, economics, psychology, management, policy and governance…

CTW ASSIGNMENT

CTW ASSIGNMENT
(Guidelines)
CTW DESIGNATION
This course is a designated Critical Thinking through Writing (CTW) course. Georgia State University generally and the Robinson College of Business in particular are dedicated to helping students in improving their approach to critical thinking and expressing that through enhanced writing skills. With this in mind, BUSA 3000 includes an assignment where criteria of evaluation for better critical thinking and writing will be applied.
Your constructive assessment of this course plays an indispensable role in shaping education at Georgia State. Upon completing the course, please take the time to fill out the online course evaluation
INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS TERM PAPER: At the start of the semester, your instructor will assign you a country. The CTW assignment involves making a clear and logical international business proposition that involves your assigned country. The proposal topic must be previously approved by the instructor before going ahead on the research. Students will explore the topic in reference to assigned countries. The Term Paper will be developed through a process of drafts that build on provided analysis and feedback. The paper should be at least 5 pages (no more than 7, typed, double spaced, with a cover page, and a list of sources cited in APA Style (your references). Please note that the cover page and list of references are not counted among the required number of pages.
Suggested Topics: Exporting, Importing, agency relationships, Outsourcing, Off-Shoring, Licensing, Franchising, Foreign Direct Investment FDI, Strategic Alliances, Joint Ventures, Greenfield Investments, Wholly Owned Subsidiaries, Acquisitions, etc. Your country is the focus for any business undertaking. All good papers, presentations, or arguments have the following format: introduction that builds to a supposed thesis, reasons why the thesis is true, and a conclusion restating the thesis.
In your paper, underline the thesis and put the main arguments in italics. Do keep in mind that in your paper as opposed to this example you do NOT say, “I think” or use any other personal pronoun (I or me)! The reader knows it is your opinion.
The final CTW version will therefore be organized as follows:
Part I. COUNTRY BACKGROUND:
Students are expected to develop a paragraph about the country background including all following items (bullet points are not accepted):
Name of the country
Location? Neighboring countries?
Territorial size of the country?
Size and make-up of the Population?
Type of Political System?
Who are the political leaders?
What political party is in power?
Derivation of the form of law: Common, civil, other?
How would you classify its economic system?
What are the GDP and the GDP per capita PPP?
Major Natural Resources?
What major products are exported and to which countries?
What are the major imports and from which countries?
Member of what economic integration organizations?
Name of the currency? Is it freely exchanged? Is it stable?
Other major and notable facts about your country?
Suggested places to start: The WorldFact Book, and your GSU Library. (5 points)
Part II. BUSINESS PROPOSITION: things like “ABC Corp is looking to outsourcing as a beneficial to reduce its cost. ABC Corp. will set-up a call center in India to …” or “Russia is ripe for foreign investment, I will invest in XYZ in Russia to …” Your thesis must be approved by the instructor via your assigned CTW Graduate Assistant (15 points).
Part III. EVIDENCE: Outline three reasons and the evidence for your conclusion. Site your sources. Include in your evidence at least one article from a newspaper/media source published in the country you have been assigned. Do not use the following sources for your local media source: AP, UPI, Financial Times, New York Times, WSJ (all editions), Deutsche Welle, Kyodo, Bloomberg, International Herald Tribune or CNN, unless you cannot find an English-language article and have your instructor’s approval. Critically evaluate the sources as to coverage and potential bias. . Your local article has to be approved by your instructor. The requirement is to learn about news, analysis and commentary from a local point of view, not from global news wire services (60 points).
Suggested international newspaper directory: FACTIVA or Lexis-Nexis databases available through your GSU Library. See the BUSA3000 Library Resources page designed specifically for this CTW project.
Part IV: CONCLUSIONS: Show that your thesis has been proved (5 points).
For example, you may describe your experience at GSU as follows:
“I am learning many interesting and potentially valuable things at GSU. My decision to attend Robinson College of Business (RCB) was an excellent choice.
This is true because: (1) The M.B.A. program at the Robinson College of Business has been listed in the US News & World Report top 10 for thirteen consecutive years, which means that the faculty and program for undergraduate students is likely also very good. (2) While at RCB I also take advantage of the Georgia HOPE scholarship, an excellent way to finance a college education. (3) GSU is located in the heart of Atlanta and one of the nation’s most dynamic business communities, providing students with access to and job opportunities in Fortune 500 corporations and small entrepreneurial firms that includes high tech, leading consumer and retail brand names as well as major players in international commerce.
Given these important considerations I made an excellent choice when I selected Robinson for my college education.”
In this simple argument, the thesis is “My decision to attend Robinson College of Business (RCB) was an excellent choice.” The reasons that the thesis is true are, “RCB is ranked as an excellent business school, HOPE helps to pay for the education you get at RCB, and RCB is located in and well integrated into a vibrant business community offering many job opportunities.” They prove that the thesis is correct. And then finally, a restatement of the thesis is provided, “I made an excellent choice when I selected Robinson for my college education.” In your paper, underline the thesis and put the main arguments in italics.
In this course we use a rubric to assess your work. Five standards are applied to assess your critical thinking skills presented in your paper. These are:
 Clarity, Precision, Relevance, Breadth, and Logic. A detailed rubric is available in iCollege (CTW paper resources)
Please keep in mind that the CTW GRA will review all versions, and your instructor will only grade the last version. Students are expected to use at least eight references, and to cite them using APA style. Sources such as the World Bank and Global Edge are highly recommended.
References, citations, format, number of pages will account for 15% of the CTW grade.
CTW structure

I – Country Background
II – Thesis (Business Proposition)
Present your thesis in italic
III – Three reasons (Evidences)
3.1. First evidence – presented in italic
3.2. Second evidence – presented in italic

he parts of the course paper (also include an introduction paragraph with a thesis statement): Be sure to support any of your own opinions with research that you cite in the paper itself.Part 1: Lithosphere- For each country, what is one major geologic feature found there (can include mountains, mountain ranges, deserts, plains, coasts, etc)? Briefly describe these features and how they came to look like how they do today. How have they formed, been shaped over time, etc?- What do you see as some pros and cons for how are humans using these features (tourism, nature reserves, sacred land, mining, etc)? In other words, how has the human impact been beneficial or harmful to people and the natural environment in the region?Part 2: Atmosphere- For each country, describe the year-round climate found in the majority of the country (climate charts called “climographs” will help with this). If there is a wide variety of climate types in one country, just pick one city and describe its climate. Be sure to include information about temperature, precipitation, and seasonal changes. – Aside from warmer temperatures, what are two ways long-term climate change has impacted each of your assigned nations ( such as changes in weather, seasons, wildlife, landforms, people, etc)? – What is being done about it?Part 3: Hydrosphere- What is one major body of water found within, or adjacent to, each of your assigned nations? Briefly describe them and where they are found within your nations. – What do you see as some pros and cons for how are humans using these hydrologic features (fishing, boating, shipping, drilling, etc)? Part 4: Biosphere: – What are the most widespread biomes in your assigned nations? ( Check a biome map!) Briefly describe these biomes and where they are found within your nations. – What are a few of the most common species of wildlife (plants or animals) in your assigned nations? – Which ones are native to your nations, and which ones came from elsewhere (called “exotic” species)? – How did the exotic species arrive, and are they threatening the existence of any native species?- What are some of the species listed as endangered in each nation?Part 5: Putting It All Together / Concluding Paragraphs- All four spheres of physical geography are interconnected. For each of the assigned nations, what are two ways that one sphere of physical geography impacts another sphere of physical geography? For e xample, how does the atmosphere affect the biosphere, or how does the hydrosphere impact the lithosphere? Be brief but provide specific examples from your two nations. – What do you see as the two most urgent e nvironmental concerns for each of the two nations to address, and why? Explain your logic. What types of programs/efforts exist to improve these issues (if you haven’t written about them earlier in the paper)?

Argumentative research paper: The population of the world’s ocean is a major threat to humanity

Topic : The population of the world’s ocean is a major threat to humanity .

Consider probing questions: What are the problems that are faced? How are the problems overcome? what are the motives of the sides involved? what is the purpose of the actions being argued ? what are the effects and who are the affected? Who is responsible? What groups or individuals are affected ? who benefits ?
Remember to verify your sources
Make a claim, one that is disputed, in doubt or controversial. Do not state a fact. Provide evidence to support your claim using credible (library) resources . Synthesize your ideas, going beyond summary and fact, creating a new idea or argument for the topic you chose.

The Review of Literature (ROL)

The Review of Literature (ROL) is a collection of scholarly articles written about a topic.
If you have ten points in your lit review (good for you!), just pick the three most important sources and make a power point slide for each one. On the last slide in the presentation, list only the sources you use in the presentation, not all ten sources. You will probably have maybe six slides in all. The presentation should be short!

If you ever have to write a ROL for a thesis or dissertation, of course you will need to have a lot more sources than this. This particular project is an exercise to help everyone learn the procedure for doing a lit review either for school or for a job assignment.

Remember that the lit review is a collection of sources that help make some kind of point. Taken together, the sources will suggest a thesis statement for the power point presentation, and that can be your opening statement i the PPTX.

I have uploaded the files for the rubric for each the powerpoint presentation(ROL) and zoom presentation. I attached the ROL as well in case you don’t find it in the related order.
