Let’s bring as many examples as possible. Feel free to relate personal observations, and add and add external resources to the discussion (you can embed images, websites, even videos).
this is the most important and most fascinating forum for me, and I bet for many of you as well. Here we can connect everything we learned about organisms, about ecosystems, and now view it from the perspective of vulnerability to disturbance, and sustainability.
Key concepts to consider are:
-Resistance versus resilience of an ecosystem against stress and disturbance.
-Carrying capacity of an ecosystem.
-Sustainable use of a resource.
-Population dynamics and conservation
-Keystone species and tipping points in ecosystems.
And there are case studies and particular examples you can elaborate on. Ideally you can use case studies as examples to illustrate the above (and other) concepts:
-overfishing
-deforestation
-land pollution
-“forever chemicals”
-ocean pollution
-oil pollution
-carbon emissions
-climate change
The TRICKY thing in this forum is to stay focused on the science. It does not help much to submit a post that describes what humans do to destroy the environment and how outraged we all are about it.
Instead, what I’d ask of you is to explain the biological principles, and if at all possible outline SOLUTIONS to the environmental problems.
Our book is a bit useless for conservation. It only lists environmental problems, but offers no solutions. by now we have amazing solutions. So you’ll need to research the up to date remedies online.
