Context:
It has been said that time is money. In planning change to positively influence outcomes, it is important that you be able to quickly and concisely articulate your ideas. An executive summary is a short document that summarizes a more in-depth report. Think of it in terms of a public service announcement or commercial in which you must grab the attention of the stakeholders in order for your project to become a priority.

An executive summary enables you to provide the executive-level leaders with a brief but effective overview of what you have determined is a need, a change, or an enhancement for the organization. A succinct, informative summary linked to the organization’s strategic plan will improve your chances of obtaining stakeholder support.

Questions to consider:
As you prepare to complete this assessment, you may want to think about other related issues to deepen your understanding or broaden your viewpoint. You are encouraged to consider the questions below and discuss them with a fellow learner, a work associate, an interested friend, or a member of your professional community. Note that these questions are for your own development and exploration and do not need to be completed or submitted as part of your assessment.

Building stakeholder support is crucial to fostering and sustaining change. Therefore, as you approach this assessment, think about the stakeholders whose support you will need for the change you want to bring about.

What information is most essential for both the formal and informal stakeholders to understand about the proposed change?
How might you communicate the need for change using just a few sentences (this is often referred to as an “elevator speech”).

By successfully completing this assessment, you will demonstrate your proficiency in the following course competencies and assessment criteria: Note: The requirements outlined below correspond to the grading criteria in the Executive Summary Scoring Guide. Be sure that your written analysis addresses each point, at a minimum.
Competency 1: Analyze quality and safety outcomes from an administrative and systems perspective.

Competency 3: Determine how specific organizational functions, policies, processes, procedures, norms, and behaviors can be used to build reliability and high-performing organizations.
Determine the strategic value to an organization of specific outcome measures.
Competency 4: Synthesize the various aspects of the nurse leader’s role in developing, promoting, and sustaining a culture of quality and safety.
Determine how a leadership team would support the implementation and adoption of proposed practice changes affecting specific outcomes.
Competency 5: Communicate effectively with diverse audiences, in an appropriate form and style, consistent with applicable organizational, professional, and scholarly standards.

controversial issue in healthcare or nursing

Write at least 200 words in response to the following prompts:

Choose a common or current controversial issue in healthcare or nursing. Formulate a question about the topic that you can research. For example, access to health insurance has been a pressing issue for the past several years. One question you could ask is “How is President Trump’s health insurance proposal (Trumpcare) different from Obama’s Affordable Care Act?”

Once you’ve formulated your question, conduct some research to find the answer. What answers did you find and from what sources? Which source do you find most credible and why? Which do you find least credible? Why?

Community Intervention

/
Paper #3 Instructions
Paper #3: Community Intervention
As the Director of Human Services in your community, you have been appointed Chair of a committee that must
propose a well-rounded set of community prevention services. The other members of the committee are leaders
of various social service agencies and community representatives. Choose a set of programs that you can justify
to the rest of the committee and to members of the community. However, you must include at least one program
for each area (pre-kindergarten education, child welfare / home visitation, youth development, mentoring, youth
substance abuse, teen pregnancy, and juvenile offender programs). You should also include programs that serve
youth from early childhood through adolescence.
Assignment
First, find the Aos et al. (2004) article on the course reserves. Using the information on pages 6-7 of that article,
choose a combination of programs that address the full range of community needs while staying within your
budget. Use the costs and benefits information and program descriptions contained in the Aos et al. (2004)
article. Use the spreadsheet provided to keep track of your choices and how much money is being spent. Identify
where on the intervention spectrum each program falls (universal, selected, indicated), as well as the number of
people that will be served by each program, and the total costs and benefits of each program. When you enter
the number of people who will get a program, as well as the cost per person and benefits per person, then the
total will be calculated automatically for you).
Second, justify your prevention strategy and proposed programs in a brief report that you must submit to the City
Council. For the report, download this document
(https://psu.instructure.com/courses/2043297/files/108888888/download?wrap=1)
(https://psu.instructure.com/courses/2043297/files/108888888/download?wrap=1) and type your answers right onto
the document itself. Based on your report, the Council will decide whether or not to fund your efforts. For this
report, you should strive to convince the Council:
1. How the community will benefit from this investment
2. How the needs of all community members are being met (poor & affluent; low-risk & high-risk; various ethnic
groups)
3. Why you are spending more money on some programs than on others
4. Why some programs are being offered to only some members of the community and how you would select
those individuals
5. Why you chose more than one program for some problem areas and why you omitted some well-known or
popular programs.
In your justification, you should draw upon any ideas or material from the semester to make the best case
possible for your proposal.

Population: 110,000
1500 children of each age (e.g., 1500 youth who are 3 years old; 1500 youth who are 7 years old)
20% Poverty rate (i.e., 300 children in each grade are below the poverty line)
125 infants born to poor, young, first-time moms each year
100 children (from 80 families) in Foster Care
200 youth per grade from ages 12-18 with a history of juvenile delinquency (i.e., a total of 1400 adolescent
youth in your community with a history of juvenile delinquency)
900 youth in the community experiment with cigarettes and/or alcohol each year
50% White; 30% African-American; 10% Hispanic, 7% Asian, 3% Native American
READ THIS BEFORE STARTING: Helpful suggestions for Paper #3
The purpose of this paper is to create an overall prevention/ intervention program for your community. Unlike
the previous two papers, you won’t be focusing on just one intervention program; you will choose many
intervention programs that will work together to address all the needs of your community (details about the
community are listed in the paper assignment). You can choose programs from the list in the Aos et al.
article on the course reserves website. The article breaks down the programs by category and also
provides all the budget information that you need, so be sure to read the article first – it is a great source of
information.
When you’re filling out the budget worksheet, make sure that you indicate whether the program is universal,
selected, or indicated. But be careful with this – even if a program is designed to be universal, but you’re only
offering it to 500 students, then it’s not a universal program anymore. The only thing that makes it universal
is if everyone (or everyone in a certain age group) gets to participate. If you’re only offering it to a select
group, then it’s either selected or indicated and you’ll need to explain that in the paper itself (and include how
you chose who gets the program and who doesn’t).
Also for the budget sheet: you don’t need to have a program for every single category. For example, you’re
using NFP in the “Home Visitation” section, so you could potentially make the argument that you don’t need a
different substance abuse program down the line because NFP, even though it’s implemented early, deters
/
kids from using substances. So you’re welcome to skip some of those categories so that you have more
money for other programs, just as long as you justify it in your paper. If you can get a program in for every
single category, that’s great. But if you think that there might be some “carry over” from a program designed
for one category in such a way that it will also impact another category, just point that out in your paper. It’s
up to you how you decide to address all those different areas.
Remember, just because a program sounds good when you read the description does not mean that it works or that it is
cost-effective. A program with benefit = $0 has no effect. A program with a benefit that is smaller than the cost will be
very hard to support.
There are 150 youth per year between the ages of 12 and 18 (i.e., 1050 youth total) who engage in
delinquency or juvenile offending. Services for these youth are expensive and it may be hard to serve all of
them. If you cannot serve everyone, explain why you can’t serve everyone and explain how you will
choose the individuals who will be in your program.
There are 300 low-income youth at every age, so that means that there are 300 3-year olds and 300 4-year
olds in the community.

UT Interprofessional Approach to Patient Care

Case: Pablo

Pablo is a 42 year old Hispanic patient. He injured his back on a construction site 8 weeks ago and was seen in the ED with a diagnosis of a herniated disc.  He was started on a regimented pain medication schedule which consisted of 2 tablets of Percocet (oxycodone/ acetaminophen) orally every 6 hours as needed and was referred to a Neurosurgeon.  He was unable to be seen by the surgeon until 5 days ago.  The surgeon recommended a conservative approach of physical therapy for back strengthening, flexibility, and postural exercises and occupational therapy for ADLs before considering surgery.

Pablo’s OT and PT appointments are scheduled for tomorrow, but he slipped in the shower yesterday and has now arrived at the local Community Care Clinic stating his pain is a “9” on a 1- 10 pain scale.  He wants the nurse to ask the physician for more medication to better control his pain as he is concerned about his OT and PT appointments scheduled for the next day.

Pablo lives at home with his girlfriend in an inner city apartment and is normally high functioning with ADLs. Pablo has mild hearing loss and English is his second language.

He is a smoker and shows early signs of COPD.  He has been unable to work since his injury and rarely leaves his home.  He is unable to do the things he used to find joy in.  The goal for this patient is to control his pain and return him to his normal level of functioning.

Discussion Questions:

  1. What unique skills and knowledge can your profession bring to helping this patient from an individual and community perspective?
  2. Please describe one profession that your profession would work with to help Pablo reach his goal and why? (do not use the same profession as your classmates)
  3. Please discuss the patient’s problems for one of the topics and how each impacts his health? (do not discuss the same thing as your classmates
    • Medical
    • Emotional
    • Social
    • Environmental
    • Economic
  4. What resources does the patient have or that are available in the community that can be mobilized to deal with each problem?
  5. Why do you think a team approach (includes all medical professions) would be better than an individual approach in meeting the needs of the patient?
  6. How do different professions understand and use social determinants? (Discuss two different medical professional besides nursing).

advocacy in public health

As we begin to discuss advocacy in public health, it’s important to address the issue of advocacy vs. lobbying. What is the difference? Much of the work of public health is conducted in the public sector (i.e., state or local health departments), so it’s important to understand the difference.

HERE IS EXAMPLE OF HOW A STUDENT ANSWER THIS:
Spevacek (2018) describes advocacy as supplying policymakers with information that demonstrates your library values and lobbying is asking policymakers to vote a specific way in support of a particular policy or bill. Advocacy involves making our voices to be heard and policymakers are empowered by our voices to find impactful solutions to problems we constantly face like budget cuts. I strongly believe advocacy influence public policies. An example of a public health advocacy issue would be educating a member of congress about the importance of installing street lights around public parks in the county where I live. Lobbying directly support or oppose a specific piece of legislation or bill. Lobbying is not illegal in the United States. Most organizations or non-governmental organizations try to influence political decisions by persuading government officials. Some provide money to these politicians by funding their events or campaigns, An example of lobbying is an insurance company lobbying a stateman to vote in favor of a new health insurance bill that is of interest to the company.

Journal

Please give your honest opinion on the attached journal article in first person.

Example:

Corey, very interesting article. I would like to start off by saying that I do agree with you, I believe teams can learn and accomplish tasks with much more ease compared to an individual attempting to do the same. However, I believe not all teams can achieve the same positive outcome due to personality clashes. For example, if a team is made up of all alpha type personalities then it would be difficult for the team to establish cohesion. Different learning styles can also hinder the team if it is only made up of visual learners when the subject is best taught via the lecture and discussion format which would benefit the auditory learners more than visual learners.

Thus your point about diversifying each group is key to success. Not only will each individual bring a different perspective to the table but will also mutually support one another as their personalities, mannerism, experiences, learning styles, etc will compliment one another.

Chapter 17 Topic: Team Building

Article Title: Exploring the links between interdependence, team learning and a shared understanding among team members: the case of teachers facing an educational innovation.

Author: Piety Runhaar; Diane ten Brinke; Marinka Kuijpers; Renate Wesselink and Martin Mulder

Source: Human Resource Development International

Date of Publication: Feb 2014

Volume and Issue Numbers: Vol. 17, Issue 1

Abstract:

Teams can be the most important part of an organization. This article and study delves into whether or not a team’s effectiveness can be strengthened by interdependence, team learning and a shared understanding. The study is conducted among 3 teacher teams at vocational education and training (VET) institutions. The topic of the study is competencies while transitioning and/or implementing competence-based education (CBE).

Relation to Chapter:

Chapter 17 covers managing organizational change. In my opinion, one of the best ways to manage organizational change is through organizational development. It is much easier to develop and build teams than it is to build and develop individual. The chapter reading and the article both are concerned with the best way a team can maximize performance, effectiveness and achieving the overall goal. Teams who learn together will have a shared knowledge and a common baseline which will benefit the team as innovation occurs, not just strengthening individuals but the team as a whole.

Critique of the Article:

Although the article and study might seem limited in scope due to the small numbers and it only being in the vocational educational field, I still found it relevant to the importance of team building and most importantly team learning. The issues of technological advances or innovation in any field are going to produce a similar situation regardless of whether they are in the teaching field or not. Individuals working as employees in any field will solve problems differently as individuals then they would in a group as a team. Team building today is important but from my experience teams are comprised of individuals that are sometimes of different skill levels, different roles, different backgrounds, too many differences to list. The basic idea of starting the team building with team learning allows many different things to happen that all are a benefit to an organization. Communicating a common goal is an important aspect of any organization or team. Building your team from the bottom and getting them to learn together regardless of prior experience or roles can help ensure a standard product or process. Some other added benefits are creating the baseline that will alleviate individual work arounds or shortcuts. A team built together will also promote overall team cohesiveness. Again, I can see the small scale of the article but the study does show that the more the teams learned together, the more they understood together and the more they knew what and how to reach the team goal. I believe if more teams were built with team learning and team development as the baseline building blocks it would cut down the time teams spend in the forming, storming, norming and performing stages.
