Critical Literature Review DOESNOT…• Identify and include the mostrelevant and significant research toyour topic.• Discuss and evaluate the research.• Identify the recognised experts.• Contextualise and justify yourresearch questions.• Consider and discuss research thatsupports/opposes your ideas.• Justify points made logically withvalid evidence.• Distinguish between fact andopinion.• Reference all items referred to fully.• Include all research that is possiblyrelevant to your topic.• Just summarises and describesresearch.• Fail to mention recognised experts.• Fail to justify or mention yourresearch questions.• Only consider and discuss researchthat supports your idea.• Ignore research that opposes yourideas.• Make unjustified or poorly justifiedpoints.• Mix up facts and opinions.• Miss out recent relevant research.• Fail to reference all or some itemsreferred to.Arguments…all arguments have 3 components:• Premises – these are assumptions NOT CLAIMS thatsomething is true or is a ‘fact’. Most arguments arebased on several assumptions but can be founded ononly one!• Inference words – these are indicators that the writeris about to draw a logical conclusion from the premisepresented. E.g. ‘Thus’, ‘therefore’, ‘because’,‘implies’, ‘hence’, ‘it follows that’, ‘so’, ‘then’ and‘consequently’.• Conclusions – an arguable statement about either therelationship between the premises or it is aninference about the consequences given thecircumstances and premises.Be Aware!….discussion may develop its own momentum without any links beingmade to the research questions you are trying to fulfil.Stating the relevance of each piece of theory to the topic of thedissertation overcomes this situation and follow such statements withan account of their significance giving an explanation of how and why.Example:• Mintzberg’s theory of structure provides the means of analysing theorganisational changes that are the subject of this dissertation.• …this quotation mirrors the situation that has motivated the researchproject.• Town planning and stakeholder theory integrates the two key aspectsof this study into…….Remember• Style– A synthesis of current knowledge– NOT a list of journals!– Do NOT plagiarise – use your OWN WORDS• Structure– Identify key concepts– Logical flow, clearly signposted• Referencing!Writing your Literature ReviewThematic approach; write about each theme one at a time.Provide overview of the research topic then narrow toresearch questions or aims and objectives.Provide overview of themes and ideas identified.For each theme summaries, compare and contrast; highlightwhat you’ve found as most relevant to your research.Provide an account of the findings of previous researchshowing how they are related to the theme.Use review to highlight your contribution linking to researchquestions.State these aspects (No. 5) will be explored in subsequentsection.Provide a summary that links to your next chapter.[Button id=”1″]
