Due date and time: Friday, 29 May 2020, 3.00pm 
Display all your working for questions where you need to do calculation. This is not an Excel computing assignment. You need to display your manual calculation working.
Your final submission must be presented and submitted in a Word document in .doc or .docx format. No pdfs or Excel files or other type of document format will be accepted! 

Simply use a new Word document and type in your answers in addressing each part of the questions. Label question numbers and parts properly, e.g. 1 a), b), c), etc, in presenting your answers. There is no need for you to re-type the questions. At the start of your assignment document, insert your name (Surname, Given Name), and your student number.

Problem 1 – Election poll (8 marks) 
The incumbent governor of a province in Indonesia believes that he will succeed in the upcoming regional election in winning more than 50% of the votes amongst the 13,324,525 registered voters. A random sample of 1,000 voters were selected. 510 people stated that they would vote for the governor. Estimate with 99% confidence the true proportion of voters who would vote for the governor.

a) You are recently hired as a junior data analyst working for the governor’s office. Specify the appropriate formula you would use to solve the problem. Provide a brief reason why you chose the formula. 1 mark
b) Obtain the 99% confidence interval estimate of the true proportion of voters who would vote for the governor. Display working. 3 marks
c) Provide an interpretation of the answers you obtained in part b) in the context of the problem. 5 marks
d) Present brief statements of two or three sentences to the governor’s office with regard to the possibility of him winning the election on the basis of the interval estimation conducted. Is it very much conclusive that he will win the election? Why? 5 marks
e) Assuming all of the other variables to do the calculation of confidence interval held constant, what would happen to the width of the interval when a lower sample size is used? 1 mark

Problem 2 – Should more police be employed? (16 marks) 
The Victorian Government is considering increasing the number of police employed in a region in Victoria in an effort to reduce crime. Before making the final decision on number of police to be employed, the Ministry of Police asked that various regions of similar size throughout Victoria to be surveyed to determine the relationship between the number of police employed and the number of crimes reported per day.
