Essay II – Catalina de Erauso The story of Catalina de Erauso (1592–1650) is famous in Spanish history because of its transgressiveness. Born into a minor aristocratic family of Basque descent, de Erauso was placed in a convent at a young age to await either marriage or religious vows. In 1603, she escaped, cut up her novice′s habit into men′s clothes, and after serving in various clerk and secretarial positions in Spain, she fled to Spanish America, where she lived for several decades as a man, before revealing her birth identity to save her own life. Read Catalina de Erauso′s autobiography. Then choose one of the social categories from the Primary Sources section of the ″Making a Historical Argument′ handout other than gender and compose an essay of 4-5 page essay which makes a historical argument about the intersection between gender and your chosen category in de Erauso′s text.
