The purpose of this assignment is to choose a country and analyze its founding moment.
§ How can we best describe the population seeking self-determination?
§ In other words, what was the core group? Did they have to fight for their independence or
not?
§ What were the characteristics or values that were central in their constitutive story?
§ How do those differ than those discussed with the United States?
Find the relevant sections in the book that discuss the founding moment of the modern
nation-state.
For example, if you are studying Germany the focus should be on Germany’s unification in
the 1870s.
