Please note hyperlinks are used in this document, some of the hyperlinks will require you to log into MYHALLAM using your SHU username and password.  All submission dates & feedback release dates will be available via your personalised assessment scheduler on Blackboard.

The assessment for this module is made up of two tasks:

  1. A 2000 word communication assignment.
  2. Successful completion of the Ongoing Achievement Record (OAR)

Introduction:

The aim of this module is that student nurses will be able to analyse, review and utilise knowledge of advanced psychological and communication science in order to enrich interactions with service users, families, carers and professional colleagues, in all the fields of nursing practice within primary, secondary and tertiary care settings.

The Learning Outcomes of this module are that by engaging successfully with this module a student will be able to:

  1. Review, apply and analyse psychological science to aid understanding of patients’ needs and provide therapeutic support.

  1. Examine the application of communication science, protocols & guidelines regarding challenging communication scenarios.

  1. Present their work appropriately for an academic audience applying accepted conventions.

  1. Demonstrate NMC competencies to meet the requirements of progression Part 2 and essential care skills required for practice, against the NMC Domains: Communication and Interpersonal skills and Leadership, Management and Team working.

For this module there are two summative assessments:  Task 1 which will provide a mark for the module and Task 2, completion of the OAR which is a pass/fail assessment.

Formative Assessment

a Skills Rehearsal including numeracy in university to Inform

Action Planning and Portfolio Development  linked to Record of Skills Experience (ROSE)

b Completion of  EU requirements

A formative assessment is an assessment for learning as opposed to a summative assessment where the assessment is of learning.  The formative assessment mark will not count towards the final mark for the module but will assist in academic development and provide feedback to aid in feeding forward to both task 1 & 2 of the summative assessment and subsequent practice.  The formative assessment task will be introduced and discussed in the first taught session and further explored relevant to the individual within academic advisory sessions.

Summative Assessments

Task 1: Challenging Communication Assignment

Task 1 will assess learning outcomes 1, 2 and 3 of the module

  • This assignment requires you generate a scenario based on a challenging communication experience encountered on one of your clinical placements. The scenario/experience MUST be described in an appendix with key elements outlined in your introduction.

Examples of challenging communication scenarios might include:

  • Managing a confused patient
  • Managing a suicidal patient
  • Managing a patient who discloses that they’ve been abused.
  • Managing a complaining relative.
  • Managing a patient who is behaving inappropriately (e.g. stripping in the day room/ smoking in the ward toilet)
  • Challenging a member of staff over poor practice
  • Dealing with patients and family following the breaking of unwelcome news.

  • With reference to your chosen scenario consider the role of nurses and others (e.g. members of the MDT, family, volunteers etc.) in the successful management and resolution of the issue in question.

  • Your assignment should take into consideration relevant psychological and communication theory and relevant recognised protocols and guidelines, which you will apply to your scenario.
The theory your work considers will be led by your scenario choice.

  • Your assignment should be written in an academic style appropriate to level 5 and use the APA referencing and the range of apps and online tools for quick and easier referencing: http://libguides.shu.ac.uk/referencing. The word count for this assignment is 2000 words +/- 10%.

  • You will need to consult literature appropriate to your chosen challenging scenario. In addition to literature specific to your particular scenario a recommended reading list for the assessment is provided on the BlackBoard site via Refworks.

  • For scoring purposes the three Learning Outcomes are equally weighted.

  • Students are reminded to remove all names and placement information from their work so that no patient, mentor or placement area can be identified to comply with confidentiality regulations. Failure to do so will trigger academic misconduct action.

PLEASE ENSURE THAT ALL WORK YOU SUBMIT IS NEW WORK AND DOES NOT CONTAIN      MATERIAL THAT YOU HAVE PREVIOUSLY SUBMITTED IN OTHER ASSIGNMENTS  i.e. self-plagiarism or duplication: copying work that was originally completed and submitted by the student and resubmitted for another purpose

Feedback

Feedback will be provided via Grade Centre in a written format.  We aim to release this 15 working days post submission.

Assessment Support

Ensure that you review the marking criteria to ensure you address all aspects and access the support mechanisms available to you that best suit your learning style and needs.

  • The assessment will be addressed in the Module Introduction Lecture, Lecture 4 & Workshop 2. There will be virtual support on the Blackboard site and also an assignment ‘question and answer’ session at the end of Workshop 2.  Students that do not attend these sessions are advised to contact their peers and session facilitator for a précis of the content they have missed in addition to accessing materials available on Blackboard.

  • The Learning Centre run study skills workshops. Further details of these can be accessed by clicking here or clicking the ‘Learning Essentials tab on Blackboard or visiting the Learning Centre. Also under the ‘Learning Essentials’ tab of MYHALLAM you will find online study skills resources.
  • Details of who is marking your work will be available under the assessment tab of the module Blackboard site. Students are reminded that the recommended deadline for providing academic advice is no later than 10 working days prior to the hand in date; this is deemed fair in terms of students having the capacity to act upon feedback.

Submission:

Task 1: is to be submitted electronically via Grade Centre and must meet the University assignment presentation guidelines available on the module BlackBoard site. A single mark for the module will be awarded.  The pass criterion for all level 5 modules is 40%.  Results will aim to be released in an un-ratified format within 15 working days of submission.  Students are reminded of the SHU rules for plagiarism, copyright, intellectual property rights and other forms of cheating.  The APA referencing system must be adhered to.

Task 2: Is submitted via the helpdesk in Robert Winston building using the submission from coversheet available to you on your personalised assessment scheduler available via MyHALLAM.  Your ongoing achievement record (OAR) has in it specific details of exactly what is required to be submitted in terms of which photocopied pages of the OAR.

Presentation:

Task 1: Your work should be typed in an A4 format using size 12 Arial or Times New Roman font and double (2.0) spacing. Pages should be numbered consecutively. Your assignment should have a front sheet that contains the following information:

  1.      Your name
  2.      Student number
  3.      Your course
  4.      Date of submission
  5.      Module Name & Intake
  6.      Number of words in your actual assignment

In-Module Retrieval (IMR) & Refer Attempts

Should you not achieve the minimum requirement of 40% in your first submission this module supports eligibility for an IMR attempt.  Your course administrator will be in touch with you by writing to confirm your options.  An IMR attempt is a re-working of your first attempt and should take into consideration feedback given from the first attempt.  Students taking an IMR attempt are strongly encouraged to seek further support from their academic advisors and the Learning Centre.  IMR attempts have a capped mark of 40%.

If the IMR option is not taken or is not successful there is a Refer attempt.  The refer attempt uses the same marking criteria, but it must be a new piece of work using a different challenging scenario agreed with your marker.

Further details of IMR and Refer options will be made available on Blackboard at the appropriate time.
