Environmental Ethics Final Essay
The final essay is intended to provide the opportunity for you to demonstrate your understanding of key issues in the field of Environmental Ethics.
The focus of the final essay is on your personal environmental ethic – that is to say the way you justify your beliefs about what is the right way to treat the environment.
This essay should be broadly comprehensive; it should be based in broad ethical premises that you apply to the key environmental issues facing us (which must include climate change).
In showing how these broad ethical premises apply, you will need to use truth claims that come from credible sources (respected organizations or media are acceptable – academic journals are not required).  Remember that an ethical argument must have ethical premises and factual premises and that these must together lead to your ethical conclusion.
You also need to explain how your environmental ethic fits with traditional frameworks of consequentialism and deontology.  You don’t have to choose one or the other, but you need to discuss your views in relation to these ethical approaches.
There are inevitable tensions between different values when you try to elaborate your environmental ethic.  This is fine – do not ignore or paper over these tensions; instead bring them out and examine them.  If you aren’t sure about how to resolve the tensions once you have examined them, that is okay.   Environmental Ethics Final Essay
In addressing the tensions, make use of a source that makes an argument that you disagree with, at least in part.
I include the word personal in the assignment deliberately – I want to hear about these issues from your perspective.  Draw on your journals, think about formative experiences in your past, above all make the abstract concrete with specific examples from your experience.  We are living through a crazy period in time that may be profoundly affecting your views on the environment and the values that you cherish.  How do we find the right balance in this historical moment?
Grading criteria:

Demonstrated understanding and application of key foundations for environmental ethics (using examples of anthropocentric and non-anthropocentric premises); demonstrated understanding and application of consequentialist and deontological modes of ethical reasoning
Clear ethical argumentation – ethical premises are clearly identified and sufficiently broad; factual premises (truth claims) are relevant and from credible, appropriately cited sources; ethical conclusion is justified; reasoning is sound
Potential objections to argument are acknowledged and addressed; opposing arguments are analyzed and points of disagreement are identified (ethical and/or factual);  uncertainty is handled thoughtfully
Scope of essay is sufficiently broad; provides an overview of your personal environmental ethic which applies to multiple situations.  Abstract issues are made concrete through the use of relevant examples drawn from your experience and research.
Writing is clear and communicates effectively (grammar, mechanics and organization)
