Directions: For your final essay, choose one of the following works of dramatic literature to read carefully and respond to with a literary analysis essay with research:
August Wilson’s Fences (Youtube video at the top of this module)
Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll House p. 812
· Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun p. 936
Don’t take any shortcuts here. You cannot write an essay worth a passing grade without carefully reading the entire play and writing an essay on it. Only use article databases as sources for information to cite in your essay. Do not use any other source whatsoever. If you look something up that is not from our library’s article database or if you use a source without citing it, you will fail this essay with a 0% F.
You may choose from one of the following topics to explore for any one of the works above:
-What does the play seem to be saying about gender roles?
-What’s the theme of the play?

Essays should include the following:
I) a captivating introduction paragraph that clearly states the essay’s main idea in a thesis statement and mentions the author’s name and the title of the work;
II) several unified, focused, and coherent body paragraphs that develop and support the thesis statement with plenty of specific quotes, examples, and details from the text and with insightful analysis and critical thinking; each body paragraph should contain at least one citation; intro and conclusion may have citations but it’s not required;

III) quotes and summaries and/or paraphrases from at least one primary source and a minimum of two scholarly secondary sources (electronic databases are probably your best option for sources though I won’t require they be your only secondary sources) along with proper parenthetical citations;
IV) a thoughtful and insightful conclusion that restates the thesis and gives the paper a sense of completion;
V) an MLA Works Cited page with works cited entries for each source used for research.
The essay should follow the guidelines and rules for writing a standard college essay as discussed in class. Papers should be revised and edited, and they should adhere to the standards of MLA style.

Essay Guidelines
· Essays should follow MLA Format. Failure to do so will result in a 0% F.
· Papers should be 4-7 pages in length. They must have at least a line on the 5th page to be considered a full 4 pages. Papers that do not meet the minimum word length requirement will automatically earn a 0% F.
I If your essay fails to include at least one citation per body paragraph, you will earn a 0% F.
· A minimum of 2 scholarly secondary (not including the primary text) sources should be incorporated into the paper. That makes at least 3 total sources. Works that are not considered scholarly (Wikipedia, SparkNotes, blogs, Book Rags, etc.) will not be counted toward these three sources. I strongly suggest using online academic databases. You can access them through our PTC Library. Papers that do not meet the minimum number of sources required will automatically earn a 0% F. You may contact me for help, but please do so early in the week. Do not wait until the last minute. I will not be able to help you then.
All sources should be listed on a Works Cited page according to MLA Format. Failure to include a Works Cited page will result in your essay earning a 0% F. Don’t forget to alphabetize.
· I do not want to scare you or for you to feel put off by all my “0% F” talk; I just want to be very clear. As always, contact me with any questions about the guidelines.
All references to secondary sources should be cited according to MLA Format within the paper.
· References to secondary sources should be introduced with signal phrases and should appear in the form of summary, paraphrase, or direct quotation.
· Avoid literal plot summaries in your writing. You should assume your reader has read the work and is familiar with it.
· Papers should be relatively free of grammatical errors. Essays should be proofread, polished, and presentable and adhere to the grammatical and mechanical conventions of Standard American English.

The attached is an example of a paper that is really good. Pls follow the style of this specific paper as it will help me getting a bigger grade.
