Watch and rewatch both Nanette (Gatsby on Netflix) and “The Danger of a Single Story” (Adichie TED talk). For this four full page essay, students will be moving away from a single story about themselves. You will weave two stories of two different sides of yourself, both in tension with each other. Here are some possibilities, although please don’t feel constrained by these (you may be creative and come up with your own). Perhaps these two different sides will show:An identity few people know about you, and another you present to the public.Contrasting personality traits, such as silly and serious, light and dark, confident and doubtful, etc.Contrasting beliefs within you about important issues, such as politics, religion, education, etc. An older, different self from the past, and the current person you are.Different cultural or ethnic, or racial identities You can use all of the above and more. While this essay is free form, meaning you can tell and structure it however you want, the challenge here will be to place indented, bold quotes from both Adichie and Gatsby in the beginning and end of the essay, and also between each paragraph. These quotes will not be placed at random, but must have a purpose. They should show thoughtful connections to your two separate stories. They might help explain, develop, or move your stories along. You can keep both sides of yourself completely separated in each paragraph or you can weave them together. Finally, please stay to double spaced, 12 Font Times New Roman, 1 inch margins. I’m not so concerned about how you put your and my name at the top, but all the essays should be in the same typography.
