Give some background to the method of analysis (IPA) and include an appropriate reference(s).

RESEARCH REPORT INSTRUCTIONS

Conduct and report a small-scale qualitative piece of research.  You must select a health psychology related research topic e.g. eating disorders, mental health, and women’s health, cancer. Then select a research question and use Interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) as form of analysis.
Data should be gathered using one of the research methods such as interviews or focus group and analysed using IPA qualitative analysis. Go to HEALTHTALK website to select a relevant topic as indicated above to gather data. You will find interviews from people along with the transcripts from their interviews. Click on show text version in order to look at the information of the interview (transcript) as well as the person’ profile information.
The report should be written primarily using the analysis as the focal point with some reference to the process of conducting the analysis (e.g. data collection, coding and theme development.
Findings should be written up in a format appropriate to the analytic technique adopted.  With this in mind, you are advised to find an example of a piece of research that has used your chosen method of analysis and that has been published in a Health Psychology journal.  You should then base your presentation of findings on the analysis presented in that journal article. THIS JOURNAL: Shaw, R. (2011.) Women’s Experiential Journey Toward Voluntary Childlessness: An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. Journal of Community & Applied Social Psychology, 21 (151–163).
Presentation guidelines
Please ensure you use the headings below to structure the report.  No other headings are required.
Introduction and aims (up to 300 words):
Give a brief introduction to the report introducing the topic and briefly consider why a qualitative approach is preferred.  You must also briefly outline the aims of the analysis.  Provide a clear, open research question and make reference to the journal where the work could be submitted (avoid ‘quantitative’ terminology) Include a relevant reference for IPA (e.g. Jonathan Smith)
Description of the approach and analytic process (400-450 words)
Provide a concise description of the chosen method of data collection and justify its suitability in relation to the research topic. Give some background to the method of analysis (IPA) and include an appropriate reference(s).  Here you should refer to the research topic and refer to the research question and/or aims.
Ensure to consider the process of analysis.  How was data collected and prepared for analysis?  Ethical issues? What were the analytical steps?  The aim here is for the reader to be able to replicate data collection and analysis.  Transcripts/ data must be appended in the appendices.
Analysis (up to 1500 words)
As stated, findings should be written up in a format appropriate to the analytic technique adopted, which is IPA then a summary table of themes should be included (including sub-themes), followed by a narrative commentary through the table including participant quotations.  Introduce the analysis with reference to participant detail and a brief reminder of the aims of the analysis.
If applicable to the analytical technique, some reflexive comments should be offered.
REMEMBER:
Introduces section; brief reminder of purpose of analysis
Participants: number, sex, age, location etc. in 2-3 sentences
Concise (titled) table of themes included
Eloquent account of each theme & relationships between themes/sub-themes (most of this section)
Narrative account goes beyond description (may make reference to existing research)
Interpretation/themes backed up with appropriate use of direct quotes and references to transcript/original text line numbers in appendices
Participant quotations concise (1-3 sentences) & distinct from narrative text
For quotation, just provide line number for each participant instead of a whole sentence quotation.
Make sure to interpret data very well
You must include 10 pages of data on the appendices section. You must include the transcript for all the participants on the appendices.

Conclusions (up to 300 words)
Please also offer a concluding paragraph.  Here there should be some brief reference/consideration of how the findings relate to health psychology research or theory.  Offer some concluding points such as wider implications of findings for research and potential intervention.
REMEMBER:
Include areas for future research, implications of findings on the conclusion section.

An appendix section must be provided containing the data collected and full dataset (transcripts) with page/line numbers.

You must consider the following criteria when writing:
Synthesis of material to answer the question in a novel or authoritative way.
Evidence of very wide-ranging and/or impressively detailed knowledge of Health Psychology research and theory.
Integration of core Health Psychology material with information about related disciplines.
Insightful or authoritative evaluations of theory and research.
Extremely well organized answers whose structure reflects the development of argument.
Professional academic writing style, with good use of language and cogent, fluent expression of ideas
