History of Race in Sports

[ad_1]
In 1998, France won the world cup for the first time. After the final whistle, crowds poured into the street, as Paris saw the largest street gathering since the liberation of the city from Nazi occupation in 1945. The team that lifted the trophy was hailed as a symbol of racial unity, and the team known as Les Blacks (the Blacks, or Noirs) Les Blancs (whites), and Les Beurs (a colloquial term for Arabs and other Middle Easterners and North Africans) was held up as a symbol of a new, multiethnic and tolerant France. Yet dissenting voices were heard as well, and the explosion of riots in 2005, among other events, caused many to doubt this vision.
