A general like or dislike for the statement will not be counted as part of the word requirement. All comments and questions are to be civil in nature. The organization that I have selected for my organizational analysis is the United States Postal Service or USPS. Working for this organization for over a year is a big reason why it has been chosen as the topic. It is a public organization that is independent. It is part of the Executive Branch of the United States of America. The Postal Services main purpose is to process and deliver all the mail in the United States. The mission statement for the USPS is, “The Postal Service shall have as its basic function the obligation to provide postal services to bind the nation together through the personal, educational, literary, and business correspondence of the people. It shall provide prompt, reliable, and efficient services to patrons in all areas and shall render postal services to all communities (Historian USPS 1999)”. The overall size of the Postal Service is greatly influencing the organization in that it is such a large establishment that the chances of it folding are slim. There are post offices all over country, including 31,585 retail offices, and over 600,000 employees employed in the postal service. The postal service also handles 47 percent of the mail volume in the entire world (Size and Scope USPS 2017). The organization loses money almost every year, but the sheer size of the whole organization will keep it up and running. Technology is another part of the USPS that is influencing the organization. It is because with all the new technology being developed it is giving the postal workers more options to get their job done. For example, while I was working for the Postal Service there was improvements to mail scanners going on that greatly bettered the mail process when it was working right. As a mail carrier delivered a package it would track it with GPS and also take a picture of where it was dropped off so if it came up missing they had a backup to help with the recovering of the item process. These scanners even have latitude and longitude readings in them that help locate items when needed. That is just one example of how technology is helping the postal service. New technology will continue to develop and if the Postal Service can keep up it should help improve the organization. However, this technology can also be a negative because when it is down then it messes up the whole mail process. Also, there are a lot of older postal workers that do not want to work with this technology and struggle with learning it so it can slow the process down as well. Implementing new technology may be easier with younger workers. The overall environment of the USPS is also affecting the organization in many ways. The Postal Service is built on deadlines. Whether it is sorting the mail in the morning or getting it all delivered in a timely manner, there is always a deadline to meet. The Postal Service is a fast-paced working environment and there is a lot of stress involved to keep up with doing things on time. From administration down to the retail clerks, you are always busy and have to pay attention to details or it will swallow you up. This stress environment can cause a lot of negatives because it can hurt the overall health of a person, it can become too much so an employee leaves, and with all the rushing around mistakes can be made easier among other things. Things are constantly changing as well as directions for certain things are changed weekly, sometimes daily, and it makes it hard to work. However, good management can help ease this stress and make working for the USPS an enjoyable experience. Each office is different and management is where it starts to create a positive environment. -Historian USPS. (October 1999). The discussion given above indicates about basic operational style and importance of USPS. it indicates that sometime there are public utility organizations which may keep losing money and not be extremely fit and proper in performance but are required to perform for certain purpose to be completed. which is the case with USPS. Another important part of the discussion is that these kind of organisations have to sail in two different boats where one part of the organization is technology savvy, young and have an acceptance towards change for better but on the other side there are people who have been working with the organisation for so many years and are resist any kind of change.
Another part which is highlighted in the discussion is that sometime the procedures adopted/defined are not fixed in nature, which makes it tough for people to operate. It is generally observed that before a single type of process is implemented it is replaced with the other one which is against the basis rules of operations and management.
The overall crux of the discussion goes in the direction that to enhance the operational efficiency of organizations like USPS the processes should be technology oriented and stagnant for some time than only these organizations will be able to perform better and prove their utility for the nation and business.
