Important: to work with this assignment you can’t be able to answer all question at the same time before I gave you more information about what to do with the next question. To do that first question one has to be answer and it will give me more information about what to do with the next question and so on until question seven. We have to communicate with me after you have answer each one and I will give you more information for the next question. How I make myself clear. Can you work with this assignment?

Introduction:
Oh no! There’s a new epidemic that is sickening thousands of people! And you’re on the team that is tasked with identifying this new pathogen and stopping it.
Here’s what we know so far:

It affects people of all ages, but it seems most serious in young children, the elderly, and people who are immune compromised.
The outbreak was first identified in early summer (June), and seemed to get worse as summer went on.
The outbreak seems to be worse in the southern states. Louisiana, Texas, Mississippi, Georgia and Florida are the worst hit.
Further study suggests it may have started in April or May in Florida.
As summer progresses, cases start to be seen further north into Virginia, Pennsylvania and Illinois, among other states.
Early research seems to suggest a link with freshwater recreation areas, like lakes, rivers and ponds, with public access and swimming areas.
Researchers have not been able to find a virus that seems to show up consistently in a significant number of cases.
Typical broad-spectrum antibiotics (ciprofloxacin, trimethoprim, etc…) have not been effective.
Signs and symptoms include:

Mild to severe diarrhea
Severe diarrhea often contains blood and mucus
High fever (over 102°F), typically starting on day three after initial symptoms
Chills
In severe cases, many patients experience a rash on their extremities.
Nausea
Bloated, gassy feeling
Death (about 10% of hospitalized cases)

Because of the details above, you start to suspect this disease may be caused by an antibiotic-resistant bacterium, although a eukaryotic parasite cannot yet be ruled out.
The exercise begins on the next page.

QUESTION 1:
Starting with the assumption that the mystery pathogen is a bacterium, outline the steps you would take to isolate it. (We’ll deal with identification in the next question.)
Assume you have access to all the laboratory equipment you would need, as well as any of the patient samples you need.
QUESTION 2:
You did it! You isolated the bacterium! (More details in Question 2 of the quiz on Canvas—remember, you have to answer question 1 first!)
Now you need to identify it. Outline a strategy to identify this organism.
QUESTION 3:
You have now identified this organism. (More details in Question 3 of the quiz on Canvas—remember, you have to answer questions 1 and 2 first!)
Now it’s time to get to work on treatment. You can let others figure out how the bacterium causes the disease—your job is to figure out how to kill it. Create a plan to identify a treatment for an infected person.
QUESTION 4:
Great job on the treatment plan! (More details in Question 4 of the quiz on Canvas—remember, you have to answer questions 1-3 first!) You can now sleep better at night knowing that you’ve saved some lives.
However, there quickly comes some bad news—more than 75% of the most severely-affected patients do not respond fast enough to save their lives. Tests show that the organism isn’t resistant to the treatment you chose, but that the infection had occurred so fast that treatment simply came too late.
So now your job is to help with prevention. First, you need to figure out how people are getting infected. Based on the details on the first page, what do you propose to do to figure that out?
QUESTION 5:
You figured it out! (More details in Question 5 of the quiz on Canvas—remember, you have to answer questions 1-4 first!) And now, because of your excellent work, fewer people are getting sick. But this epidemic seems to keep evolving.
There is some evidence that it might have become foodborne, and you need to isolate it. Using the skills you outlined in question 4, you track it down to unpasteurized fruit juice. Create a plan to enumerate the bacteria present in different samples of fruit juice.
QUESTION 6: You found it! You tracked down measurable numbers of bacteria in one brand of unpasteurized apple juice. It turns out the orchard had sprayed contaminated water onto the apples after picking.
What do you recommend to the manufacturers of the apple juice?
Question 7:
It turns out that this organism has never before been characterized. What do you want to name it? Lab Exercise Microbiology Assignment Help
