Four major stages of change are as explained below:
Denial: In this stage people get ignorant towards change and defy it i.e. they behave as if there is nothing new that has happened and everything is as per the set format. They do not accept the reality and concentrate on other things except the change.
Resistance: At this stage people realize that they have to change their way of working as a change is actually happening and this is followed by anger, arguments, blaming the higher management, resigns and many other unpleasant things before things start settling down. Basically, in this phase employees are not in a mood to welcome the change (although they have accepted that a change is taking place)
Exploring: In this phase, people accept the change and start working as per the needs and requirements of the change process. They try and adapt to the situation, find new ways to do work and gracefully start working together by leaving all the issues they had behind. This phase is often liked by change initiators.
Commitment: In this phase, team completely adhere to the changed way of working, all the arguments get settled, things come back to normal conditions and there is no conflict i.e. change gets completely accepted by almost everybody in the organization.
Some of the barriers to change are:
Employees do not participate as much as they should.
Ineffective way of communicating the change to the team
Stiff cultural attitudes in the organization.
Extreme inter linking between departments and complex organizational structure.
