For those who would like to come up with their own topics for the final paper (especially for Comparative Literature majors): If you would prefer to write an essay for a final paper on a topic of your own choosing (i.e. you come up with your topic), please email me separately. The deadline and minimum word count still apply. Please note that you can NOT “recycle” papers you wrote earlier in the semester for the final paper—it must be an original paper.
Prompts: Write an essay responding to ONE of the following prompts:
1) In Rajaa Alsanea’s Girls of Riyadh, how are gender roles (both male and female) and female empowerment in Saudi Arabian society depicted through the lives of the four main characters: Gamrah, Sadeem, Michelle, and Lamees?
2) In Rajaa Alsanea’s Girls of Riyadh, how are globalization and cultural differences between Saudi Arabia and other countries, including the US and England, depicted? How do each of the four main female characters, Gamrah, Sadeem, Michelle, and Lamees, respond to foreign places and cultures and how do their responses differ? In comparison with other places, do you think the novel depicts Saudi culture and society in a negative light? Why or why not?
3) Who is the narrator of Rajaa Alsanea’s Girls of Riyadh and why is the fact that she remains anonymous and uses the Internet important? Provide evidence from the text to back up your argument.
4) Basma Abdel Aziz’s The Queue is an allegorical and dystopian novel that depicts Egypt in the aftermath of the 2011 Revolution. Through the story of Yehya, and other characters such as Dr. Tarek, Amani, and Um Mabrouk, how does the novel represent the relationship between the state and the people? What is the Gate, what does it symbolize, and how doe it affect people’s lives? What happens to Yehya in the end of the novel and what message does the conclusion send?
