music paper 6 – Essay Writers

Students will use the topics covered in class as a starting point to do their own extended research into an artist of their choosing. Papers should be between 5 and 7 pages and should be formatted in an appropriate MLA format. In this paper, students will cover 3 main areas outlined below: Artist History, Defining Album, and Defining Song. Throughout the paper, students must relate the artist to the 5 main themes of popular music
Listening Critically – covered by an in-depth listen and explanation of a songMusic Business – what impact did they have on the industry did the industry affect themMusic Technology – did this artist adopt or make use of new technologyMusic and Identity – who are the people who identify with this music or was their music used as a symbol of anythingCenters and Peripheries – Where does their music fit in-terms of popular taste.
Artist History (minimum 2 pages)Write a short, focused, biography of your chosen artist. At the very least you must include:
Origins of the band, how they got together, previous iterations, ect
OR
information on the upbringing of the artist that may have effected their music.
Information about their first break into the market, including placements on the top 40 (or any equivalent popularity chart) and any previous failures.
Touch on important albums as they relate to the progress of their career (feel free to mention their defining album, but save heavy info for that section)
Important career points (famous (infamous) concerts, signing to labels, changing labels) controversy, shuffling of members.
Points about their musical style including any stylistic changes and why they may have taken a new direction. (details are required for any stylistic periods they go through)Along with these points, you MUST include anyone or anything your chosen artist cited as an influence, and any artists in the future who cited your chosen artist as their influence (who influenced your artist, and who did your artist influence)Your chosen artist MUST make an appearance in our text book.
Defining Album (Minimum 2 pages)Choose one of your artist’s albums. This album should be one that is a great demonstration of the artist’s sound, style, and attitude. Think of it as a way of showing someone who had never heard this artist before what they truly sound like. This must be a standard studio album and may not be a compilation album, greatest hits album, or live album. In this section you should detail the following:
When was this album made? (actual time, and in the context of the history of the artist)
Who are the personnel on this album? (band, producers, arrangers, backing group ifany)
Why was this album made? (are there any interesting facts behind the decision to makethis album)
Where was this album made? (all in one place? Multiple locations at multiple times?)
What does the album consist of in terms of songs and styles? (how many songs, anything interesting about the order, what’s the style of the songs, are there contrastsin style? Does it change the style at all from previous releases from this artist?)
How did this album effect the market? (placement on charts, did it influence anythingafter it.)If your artist recorded before the time of full albums, you may elect to cover a posthumous compilation album, or a second Defining Song.Defining Song (minimum 1 page)Choose one song to analyze. The Analysis should cover lyrical content, arrangement, and other interesting aspects. This song does not necessarily have to be a song on the album you chose. Be sure to include which version of the song you are referencing, some artists recorded the same song with different arrangements. Your paper should include the following:
Where did this song come from and when was it recorded?o Was it a part of an album? Was it a single?
What is this song about?o Look at the lyrics and explain the meaning of the song, are there any metaphors?
What instruments are on this recording?o Is there anything significant about the use of these instruments?
What form is this song in?o Is it one of the forms discussed in class? Is there anything significant about it?
Is there anything significant about the chord progression?o Is it standard, does it sound like everything else? Is it a bit different?
Is this song in any way a copy or “rip-off” of something that came before it?
How did this song effect the market? Where did it place on the charts? Did it influence anything after it?
