PICOT and Literature Search

PICOT questions are used by researchers to focus research questions and develop a productive literature search strategy. You will create 3 PICOT questions and search for evidence for your individual quantitative appraisal and group review of literature paper. Be sure to develop questions about topics that interest you.
PICOT Questions
• Write 3 PICOT questions related to nursing. Use PICOT templates in the EBP Step by Step 3 article in Brightspace to create your questions.
• Identify the PICOT elements for each question.

Search Strategy and Execution
• Develop a search strategy using keywords, synonyms and MeSH terms for your PICOT questions.
• Using any one of the PICOT questions and the search strategy for it, locate 4 primary source quantitative articles that help answer your PICOT question.
• No article can be older than 2014.

THE FOLLOWING ARE INSTRCUTIONS FROM THE INSTRUCTOR TO CLARIFY THE ASSIGNMENT:

It is very important that you follow the process of creating your PICOT assignment, step by step. Skipping over a step or rearranging the steps will cause confusion for you.

Here are the steps.
1. Make a background question. Just jot down your thoughts.
2. Use the correct template in the EBP Step by Step article I gave you in class and which is in Brightspace. It is a “fill in the blank” to help you formulate your PICOT question so that you don’t skip or miss a part.
3. Identify the parts of PICOT with the help of the article.
4. Create keywords based on your population, intervention/issue, and outcome.
5. Create synonyms from the keywords. Only one is required, but the more you have, the better. This helps you do your search.
6. Find one MeSH term from pubmed.gov
7. Choose your databases from the ResU library databases.
8. Put in a selection of keywords (only two or three), one for each search box.
9. Use your date limiter.
10. Scan titles –> eliminate/choose; scan abstracts –> eliminate/choose; scan articles –> eliminate/choose.
At a minimum, your article should study the same population and issue and measure the same outcome as indicated in your PICOT.
11. Ensure your chosen article is primary.
Does is follow the IMRaD format? If the authors are writing about an experiment they did, it is primary. If the word “review” is in the title of the article, it is NOT primary. If there are participants mentioned in the abstract, it is primary.

Thank you,
Lynette Glanton -Please let me know how much the project will cost in total. I wasn’t sure of how many pages this assignment will produce.
